President-elect Donald J. Trump’s recent nominee for Surgeon General, Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, is facing opposition from some corners of the MAGA movement. Videos from the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic featuring Nesheiwat endorsing mask mandates and vaccination efforts have resurfaced, sparking criticism and concerns about whether the doctor still supports the measures.
Nesheiwat, who previously served as a medical director at CityMD in New York, was known for her firm stance on COVID-19 precautions, which she frequently shared on Fox News. These positions have led to scrutiny from Trump’s loyal base, many of whom question the nomination due to her past advocacy of masking and vaccination for children. Also of concern is Nesheiwat’s past support for social media companies like Meta—the parent company of Facebook and Instagram—moving to censor so-called ‘misinformation’ regarding the pandemic.
“Vaccines save lives, and I am so excited, and I thank and commend Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg for taking action because this affects everyone,” Nesheiwat said on a Fox Business panel, praising the Meta CEO’s pandemic censorship decisions.
However, as the Biden-Harris government and Democrat-controlled states moved to enforce vaccine mandates, Nesheiwat changed her tune. “There’s no good reason to have a vaccine that can’t stop disease, can’t stop transmission on the scheduled vaccination,” she said, speaking with then Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
This controversy comes amid other challenges faced by another of Trump’s potential administration picks. Chad Chronister, nominated for the Drug Enforcement Administration, stepped down following MAGA pressure due to his COVID-related actions as a Florida sheriff.
