🎯IMPACT: The failed Democratic vice presidential candidate’s comments suggest he is not interested in helping to de-escalate tensions in his state.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) has re-escalated his criticism of the Trump administration this week, after initial, seemingly positive talks with President Donald J. Trump and Border Czar Tom Homan aimed at easing tensions following the shooting of anti-ICE activist Alex Pretti by Border Patrol. “They started this fire, and we are not going to give them credit for putting it out,” Walz said of the administration, despite his own long history of inflaming the public against federal law enforcement, for instance, by comparing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to Adolf Hitler’s Gestapo.
In an interview, Walz acknowledged some improvement in discussions with Homan, citing a “tone shift” and “progress,” but questioned Trump officials’ sincerity, arguing they are infected with “a cruelty that runs so deep” and have only reached out to him because of criticism of the Pretti shooting in the media. In recent days, Walz has gone so far as to compare ICE efforts to arrest illegal immigrants in Minnesota, including killers and violent pedophiles, to Nazis hunting Anne Frank, drawing sharp criticism from the Holocaust Museum.
Notably, Walz’s return to inflaming the public against the federal government follows pressure from far-left activists, who surrounded his office in the state capitol following his dialogue with Homan demanding a hard line against federal immigration enforcement.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D), who also held talks with Trump and Homan initially reported as positive, has also since come out to vow his city will not uphold federal immigration law, prompting the President to warn he is “playing with fire.”
