A Sudanese refugee sparked outrage with his courtroom remarks after he was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison for raping a woman in Sunderland, England.

In 2024, Harun raped a woman at his flat in Sunderland in north-east England. Harun denied the charges, but was found guilty following an eight-day trial. Harun was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison at Newcastle Crown Court on Monday. “She said in the flat you had forced yourself upon her. She describes you having raped her in the kitchen… She said she didn’t want to have sex with you and describes you being all over her and that the sex was forceful and hurt,” concluded Judge Carolyn Scott. The victim described the attack as “the worst day of my life” and said that Harun “stole my carefree and trusting nature.” Harun met the victim in a local park before taking her back to his flat for a drink. Following the assault, the victim fled the flat and contacted the police from a nearby shop. Footage of the victim fleeing Harun’s flat was captured on CCTV. As he was sentenced, using the assistance of an interpreter, Harun said: “I don’t want to stay in England, f**k England, I don’t want to stay.”
