He later pleaded guilty to two counts each of criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and on school premises, along with one count each of possessing a bladed article in a public place and on school premises. His defense argued Deng did not intend to harm anyone and had sought to attract the government’s attention over his failed asylum claims and inability to work while living in the United Kingdom. Judge Bernadette Baxter said the Home Office should address Deng’s immigration status but conceded the court had no authority to direct the department’s actions. Deng will serve only half of his two-year term in custody and the remainder on license among the public, and because he has already spent nearly a year in custody since his arrest, he could be released from prison shortly.
