New research has revealed that new Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) restrictions have reduced sugary drink purchases among food stamp recipients.

Researchers initially suspected that SNAP recipients would use other funds to purchase soda. “In our paper, we show that the effects are sustained over six months… [I]t’s likely that the effects will be sustained over an even longer time, but it’s possible that the effects will decrease,” said Hunt Allcott, economist at Stanford University and co-author of the study. At the time of reporting, eight states have issued bans on soda being purchased with food stamps, along with other unhealthy items, with more states expected to follow.

New data has revealed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested nearly 50,000 migrants in July, marking a record high during President Donald J. Trump’s second administration.

The increase in arrests is the likely result of the agency’s workforce being expanded with roughly 12,000 new hires, along with the President’s decision to maintain traffic stops as part of ICE operations. This new data also means that President Trump has achieved more monthly arrests than his predecessors, even surpassing the peak of monthly arrests during former President Barack Obama’s tenure in 2011.

The mass revocation aims to tackle the misuse of short-term visas to gain permanent residency through asylum claims. “People in the U.S. and all over the world are fed up with bogus asylum claims. Asylum isn’t supposed to be a loophole to circumvent immigration laws… But the system has long been swamped by frivolous asylum claims, meaning that it takes years to adjudicate whether applicants are actually entitled to asylum—during which time they can typically work, have children, and otherwise put down roots in our country,” posted Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau on X (formerly Twitter). The revocation will be implemented over the coming weeks in a joint effort by the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

📺 DETAIL: In a Monday interview, El-Sayed said an “honest conversation” about reparations “shouldn’t be a crazy thing.” This follows reports from earlier this month that El-Sayed had called for reparations in the past. “We owe so much more than ‘thanks.’ Time for Reparations,” posted Abdul El-Sayed in a 2019 Thanksgiving post on X (formerly Twitter). This was among several other unearthed remarks by El-Sayed, including attacks on Thanksgiving, July 4 celebrations, and Michigan’s Mackinac Island. The unearthed posts were deleted following backlash. El-Sayed also suggested that reparations could resolve school funding in the state. “In the city of Detroit right now, they just had $700 million invested in their schools… They’re still $1.7 billion behind… a lot of that has to do with public policy… if public policy created a level in which black folks disproportionately suffer everything from maternal mortality and infant mortality to lack of access to jobs, I think it’s important for our country to have a conversation about how to make people whole,” said El-Sayed.
