A former Pakistani international cricketer has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment in the Netherlands after he placed a three million rupee (then around €21,000/$22,500) bounty on the head of the Dutch populist conservative leader Geert Wilders in 2018.
Khalid Latif, who made 15 appearances for Pakistan across multiple formats of the sport, posted a video targeting Wilders after the Dutch politician announced a contest to depict the Islamic prophet Mohammed – a competition which was later canceled.
A Dutch court found on Monday that the video actively incited violence, murder, and sedition against the politician, stating, “he promises to pay a considerable sum of money to anyone who engages in a specific act, namely the killing of Mr Wilders… It is very likely that someone – anywhere in the world – would feel compelled to act on this call.”
This is the first time the Netherlands has tried a non-national living abroad, as Latif resides in Pakistan. He did not deploy a lawyer at the trial.
Following the decision, Wilders took to X (formerly Twitter) to demand Latif’s extradition to the Netherlands:
“[Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte] and [the Minister of Justice and Security Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius] must put strong pressure on the Pakistani authorities to cooperate in the arrest and extradition of this now convicted criminal, otherwise he will still avoid punishment.”
