A 65-year-old man developed a tumor on his left shoulder three months after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, according to a report published in the American Journal of Case Reports by researchers from the University of California Riverside. The report identified the growth as a pilomatrixoma, a benign tumor that emerges from a hair follicle.
In their paper, the researchers stated that increased awareness of the potential for pilomatrixoma in connection to vaccine injections could potentially improve diagnosis accuracy and decrease unnecessary treatments and examinations. The condition is most often seen in individuals under 20, and slightly more common in women. It typically occurs in the head and neck region.
In this particular case, the mass, which did not appear infected, was 3 cm in diameter. Doctors confirmed it as pilomatrixoma upon its surgical removal. The researchers noted that the tumor did not recur after surgery.
