Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Hua Chunying criticized US officials over their concerns regarding national security threats posed by spy balloons and TikTok. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Hua said: “If the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” Her post additionally included a meme titled “The US-China Threat Dictionary” and listed Huawai, TikTok, weather balloons, cargo cranes, corn mill, garlic, and vehicles as threats to America.
The Chinese foreign affairs official’s comments appear to be in direct response to US lawmakers introducing a bipartisan bill that could potentially force TikTok to separate from ByteDance or face being banned. Huawei, the telecommunications giant mentioned in Hua’s post, has been subject to US sanctions. National security experts warn the Chinese-owned company could pose a risk to Western telecommunications infrastructure and a risk of espionage due to its ties to the Chinese military.
Hua’s meme also referred to US concerns regarding weather balloons that appear to carry monitoring devices and other technology that have appeared over US airspace in the last two years. The balloons of Chinese origin are believed to serve an espionage purpose — despite Beijing’s insistence that they’re academic weather monitoring devices.
Additionally, Hua’s post dismisses concerns regarding the purchase of large swaths of American farmland by Chinese state-owned entities. Several US states have begun to take measures to limit foreign land purchases — especially when the property is located near military or law enforcement facilities. Hua’s mention of ‘vehicles’ appears to be in reference to Biden government cyber-security concerns regarding Chinese-made electric vehicles.
