Electronic voting machine company Smartmatic has reached an undisclosed settlement with One America News Network (OANN). The settlement pertains to a lawsuit by Smartmatic against OANN, accusing the network of conveying unfounded allegations linking its technology to election manipulation in 2020.
“Smartmatic has resolved its litigation against OANN through a confidential settlement,” confirmed Eric Connolly, an attorney representing Smartmatic.
The legal dispute stemmed from OANN’s coverage of the 2020 election where, according to Smartmatic’s lawsuit, the network “spread disinformation” related to election fraud.
“OANN knew its assertions about Smartmatic were not true,” the lawsuit alleged, insisting: “OANN had seen no evidence to support the assertions. But OANN chose to spread disinformation.”
Smartmatic has lodged similar lawsuits against Newsmax and Fox News. These remain unresolved.
Newsmax has previously argued it “reported accurately on allegations made by well-known public figures,” accusing Smartmatic of mounting “a clear attempt to squelch the rights of a free press.”
