Despite the Liberal Democrats fueling the conspiracy theories, demanding Reform “come clean with evidence,” the BBC now confirms it has “found no evidence that any of Reform’s candidates were fake.”
Former prime minister Rishi Sunak called the July 4 election on extremely short notice. This forced Reform, which won five seats in the election, to field a number of so-called “paper candidates” who did little or no active campaigning.
These included “friends, relations, office workers,” a spokesman explained.
Farage has promised his five-man contingent will be a “bridgehead” in Parliament, holding the governing Labour Party to account. He hopes they can form the basis for a mass movement for electoral reform and a new government in 2029.

Bayer’s Global Head of Pharmaceuticals, Stefan Oelrich, said companies that were not contacted should still have a chance to participate. “Otherwise, that would be very odd, that only because you have size that you would get different treatment,” Oelrich stated.
Some smaller firms have formed a new trade group, the Midsized Biotech Alliance of America, to advocate for more inclusive negotiations and to push back against Medicare pilot programs known as GLOBE and GUARD. These pilots would require drugmakers to provide rebates if U.S. prices exceed those charged in certain foreign markets, potentially forcing broader price reductions under Medicare. While Medicaid represents about 10 percent of U.S. drug spending, Medicare’s larger footprint could create greater financial pressure.
Sanofi CEO Paul Hudson has indicated that larger companies may be better positioned to absorb pricing concessions, while mid-sized firms with fewer products face greater risk. “A lot of them are very worried that… they’re going to get stuck with what the bigger guys did that works for them and doesn’t work for the mid-sized guys,” said an industry lobbyist.

A group of U.S. District Court judges are utilizing several workarounds to avoid conflicting with a Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling from Friday that cleared the way for the Trump administration to continue detaining illegal immigrants without issuing bond. The Fifth Circuit’s ruling found that “unadmitted aliens apprehended anywhere in the United States are ineligible for release on bond, regardless of how long they have resided inside the United States.”
However, two federal district court judges in Texas—so far—believe they have identified a loophole in the appellate court ruling that allows lower courts to continue issuing bond releases for illegal immigrants based on constitutional grounds. District Court Judges Kathleen Cardone—a Bush appointee—and David Briones—a Clinton appointee—both contend in rulings made earlier this week that the Fifth Circuit ruling “has no bearing on this Court’s determination of whether [the petitioner] is being detained in violation of his constitutional right to procedural due process.”
Both judges insist a “liberty interest” must be considered in relation to immigration bond requests. Judge Briones wrote in his ruling on Monday, “The Court reiterates its original holding that noncitizens who have ‘established connections’ in the United States by virtue of living in the country for a substantial period acquire a liberty interest in being free from government detention without due process of law.”
The rulings by both judges appear to be a blatant attempt to circumvent the Fifth Circuit ruling, which had shot down claims that because the former Biden government used executive discretion to grant some bond requests—mostly involving illegal immigrants with so-called “established connections” to the United States—the policy was binding on the Trump White House. “That prior Administrations decided to use less than their full enforcement authority under [the law] does not mean they lacked the authority to do more,” Circuit Judge Edith H. Jones wrote for the two-to-one Fifth Circuit majority.
Notably, illegal immigrants have filed an unprecedented number of “habeas” petitions across Louisiana and Texas, where the Fifth Circuit has jurisdiction. Meanwhile, several other district court judges outside the Fifth Circuit’s jurisdiction—and almost exclusively Biden appointees—slammed the Friday ruling. New Jersey District Court Judge Evelyn Padin—a Biden appointee—said she was “unpersuaded” by the ruling, while Colorado District Court Judge Charlotte Sweeney—also appointed by Biden—accused the circuit court of paying merely “lip service” to the law.

A partial government shutdown starting at midnight on February 14 is becoming increasingly likely as Senate Democrats continue to refuse compromise proposals that would secure long-term appropriations for most of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). With just days remaining until the funding deadline, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced on Wednesday that his caucus would reject a short-term funding extension, known as a continuing resolution (CR), unless their demands for significant changes to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations are met.
“We’re 3 days away from a DHS shutdown and Republicans have not gotten serious about negotiating a solution that reins in ICE and stops the violence. Democrats will not support a CR to extend the status quo,” Sen. Schumer wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Lawmakers on Capitol Hill must adopt either a short-term or long-term funding bill for DHS by Friday before the department’s current funding lapses. Notably, the annual appropriation for DHS was stripped out of a package of funding bills last week as part of a deal that ended a brief government shutdown at the start of February.
While negotiations on DHS funding continue behind closed doors, the chances of an agreement in the Senate appear remote. Senate Democrats recently unveiled a 10-point proposal, but Republicans have criticized the plan, labeling some provisions as “red lines” for the White House and GOP lawmakers.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) had indicated optimism earlier this week, stating, “There’s going to be the legislative text coming over from the White House today. But I think it’s, like I said, the White House is operating in good faith.” Despite this, Democrats dismissed the GOP’s counteroffer as “sophomoric talking points.”
A DHS shutdown would affect key agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and the U.S. Coast Guard. However, ICE and other immigration enforcement agencies were already largely funded through the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill last summer.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a prominent British billionaire and part-owner of Manchester United, has voiced concerns over mass migration transforming the United Kingdom. He argued that the country has been “colonised” by immigrants, placing significant strain on state resources.
Ratcliffe, the founder of the INEOS chemicals group, highlighted the challenges Britain faces, including a substantial increase in immigration over recent years. He noted, “You can’t have an economy with nine million people on benefits and huge levels of immigrants coming in.”
“I mean, the UK has been colonised. It’s costing too much money,” Ratcliffe said. “The UK has been colonised by immigrants, really, hasn’t it? I mean, the population of the UK was 58 million in 2020, now it’s 70 million. That’s 12 million people,” he estimated.
Speaking at the European Industry Summit in Antwerp, Ratcliffe also commented on Britain’s current political leadership, questioning whether Prime Minister Keir Starmer is the right person to lead the country. He said Nigel Farage, whose Reform Party currently tops the polls, is “an intelligent man [with] good intentions,” and suggested that the country requires someone willing to make unpopular decisions to address critical issues.
“I’ve been very unpopular at Manchester United because we’ve made lots of changes. But for the better, in my view. And I think we’re beginning to see some evidence in the football club that that’s beginning to pay off,” he said, explaining: “If you really want to deal with the major issues of immigration, with people opting to take benefits rather than working for a living, if you want to deal with that, then you’re going to have to do some things which are unpopular, and show some courage.”
