HBO’s late night “comic” John Oliver hosted a segment this week attempting to bribe/mock Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. In the “bit,” Oliver deployed such side-splitting gags as suggesting the second black Supreme Court Justice has friends with “Hitler shrines.” I swear these writers were funnier when they were on strike.
But it got me wondering: was John Oliver always this unfunny? Turns out yes.
In fact, his stint on the British Broadcasting Corporation’s Mock the Week panel show was perhaps one of the poorest in the show’s 17-year history. When the show was cancelled in 2022, they released a “Best Bits” video of Oliver, which you should judge for yourself.
It’s… appalling.
