The Biden-Harris regime has vastly increased spending for transgender treatments, including sex change surgeries for minors, spending millions of taxpayer dollars. From January 2018 to September 2023, 16 states allocated over $165 million for “gender transition services.” This spending included $45 million on procedures for children aged 17 and under.
The figures come from state records on reimbursements for gender transition services covered by state insurance and medical assistance programs. These employ medical billing codes, including those from the International Classification of Diseases.
Illinois, Oregon, and Washington recorded the highest reimbursements for such services, spending $40.8 million, $30 million, and $27.1 million, respectively. Services for minors amounted to $14.3 million in Illinois. Other states, like Maryland and Nevada, also contributed significant amounts to these services.
The data reflects a 60 percent increase in funding for these interventions between 2020 and 2022, coinciding with the Biden-Harris regime’s policies. One such policy included diverting federal foster care funds to pay for fake penises for children to support their chosen gender identity.
The expansion of Medicaid funding has made transgender-related surgeries for minors more accessible. Changes in federal policy regarding discrimination under the Affordable Care Act also played a role.
Additionally, in 2014, under the Obama-Biden government, federal rules were further altered to include protections for gender identity. This prevented insurance companies from denying coverage for sex-change procedures. The federal anti-discrimination rules were reinstated by the Biden-Harris regime after the administration of President Donald J. Trump reversed them.
In recent years, the prescription of puberty blockers has been deemed unsafe in many countries and banned.
