Xi: Nothing Will Stop Us Taking Taiwan.

China’s President Xi Jinping rang in the New Year by pledging that nothing would stop the communist state’s takeover of Taiwan. During his televised New Year’s speech, the autocratic leader of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) defiantly declared that no other nation could prevent China from annexing the breakaway island, which has maintained its independence since 1949, without ever being controlled by the People’s Republic of China.

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te, in his New Year’s address, underscored Taiwan’s role as a critical component of the global “defense of democracy.” Lai reiterated Taiwan’s willingness to engage in dialogue with Beijing but did not back down on strengthening Taiwanese military capabilities. According to Taiwan’s defense ministry, the new year commenced with Chinese warplanes and ships conducting a “combat patrol” around Taiwan. Such maneuvers, which involve air and maritime deployments near Taiwan, have become a frequent occurrence.

President Xi has routinely threatened Taiwan’s sovereignty to stoke national unity in mainland China. In December 2023, ahead of Taiwan’s elections, Xi stated that China would take the island “by any means.” A month later, pro-CCP candidates were soundly defeated at the polls by Tawainese leaders backing continued independence from the mainland. While the entrenchment of anti-CCP leaders has blocked any diplomatic path to reunification, it may push Xi and the CCP towards more open conflict regarding integrating Taiwan.

The National Pulse reported in March that U.S. Admiral John Aquilino, head of the Indo-Pacific Command, testified before Congress that China is increasing its nuclear and military capabilities in preparation for a potential invasion of Taiwan by 2027. Aquilino noted that China also possesses advanced modern systems, enabling it to exert significant control in the Pacific.

Saudi Migrant’s Deadly Christmas Market Attack Blamed on ‘Mental Illness.’

Far-left German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser claimed on Monday that the Saudi migrant suspected of carrying out a deadly car-ramming attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, may have been “psychologically disturbed and… driven by confused conspiracy theories.”

The Social Democrat politician insisted, “Such attackers do not fit any threat profile”—although mass casualty vehicular attacks in Continental Europe, such as those in Magdeburg, Berlin, Stockholm, and Nice, are almost exclusively carried out by migrants from Muslim-majority countries. Instead, she stressed that the suspect, Dr. Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, showed “striking signs of a pathological psyche.”

Speaking to reporters, Faeser stated that investigators have not yet determined a motive for the attack. Her statements came after a session with a parliamentary committee investigating the December 20 attack, which resulted in five deaths and over 200 injuries.

Faeser also referenced copious social media activity on the part of Abdulmohsen, noting that “tens of thousands of tweets” over the years still need to be analyzed.

BACKGROUND.

The German authorities are facing criticism for allowing the Saudi to carry out the attack, as the authorities in his home country had sent them at least four warnings about his “very extreme views” as recently as last year.

He arrived in Germany in 2005 and was granted asylum in 2016, despite being fined for making threats in 2013, further threatening attacks that would gain “international attention” in 2014, and threatening to obtain a firearm and shoot judges in 2015.

There is some evidence Abdulmohsen held “anti-Islamic views,” with Faesar insisting he is “Islamophobic” and the German federal police attempting to link him to the “extreme right.” However, it is relatively commonplace for migrants from countries like Saudi Arabia to fake apostasy, homosexuality, and other beliefs and lifestyles prohibited under Islamic law to bolster their claims they would face persecution if they were deported.

Musk’s Starlink to Provide ‘Uninterrupted’ Service for Ukraine.

Starlink, the satellite Internet service operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, is set to provide continuous service to Ukraine through a new agreement with Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest mobile operator. The collaboration makes Ukraine one of the pioneering nations in Starlink’s direct-to-cell service, following the completion of its phone constellation on December 4 with the launch of 13 satellites into low orbit. Starlink has more than 6,800 satellites in orbit, with over 300 equipped for direct-to-cell communication.

A key component of this partnership is Kyivstar subscribers’ ability to maintain communication even if the ground network is disrupted. This is particularly crucial as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues, with many residents dependent on phone alerts for warnings about possible attacks.

Last year, Kyivstar experienced a severe cyberattack attributed to the ongoing war, which jeopardized the delivery of air raid alerts to millions.

Initially, thousands of Starlink terminals were sent to Ukraine at the onset of the conflict to provide free Internet access. Although funding challenges arose due to the growing expense, the Pentagon has extended its contract with SpaceX to maintain service into 2025.

STARLINK IN AMERICA.

Musk has deployed Starlink in various parts of the world and tried to use the service to aid those affected by Hurricane Helene earlier this year. However, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) allegedly seized aid meant for victims of the disaster, including blocking the distribution of Starlink terminals.

FEMA supervisor Marn’i Washington reportedly told workers to avoid homes in Florida that displayed support for President-elect Donald J. Trump following Hurricane Milton. After being suspended, she went public, alleging such behavior was commonplace throughout Florida and North Carolina and that she was being scapegoated.

Azerbaijan Demands Apology & Compensation from Russia After Plane Crash.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev is demanding not only an apology from Russia over the downing of an Azerbaijan Airlines flight but compensation for the victims and punishment for those responsible. The incident, which occurred last Wednesday, involved an Embraer 190 airliner flying from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, in Russia’s Chechen Republic.

The plane crashed in Kazakhstan after encountering interference with its navigation systems and being struck by what Azerbaijan claims were external objects, likely missiles. The crash resulted in the deaths of 38 out of 67 passengers, over half of them Azerbaijani citizens.

Russia has equivocated on its responsibility for the disaster, maintaining silence for three days before President Vladimir Putin issued a non-committal apology on Saturday. Russian officials have suggested the Grozny area was being subjected to a Ukrainian drone attack at the time of the crash and that air defense missiles were in the air.

Aliyev has dismissed Putin’s apology as insufficient. “We can clearly say today that the plane was shot down by Russia,” Aliyev stated on Sunday. He criticized Russia’s initial response, which included a suggestion that the crash could have been due to fog or birds, branding these explanations “absurd.”

Azerbaijan, a former Soviet Socialist Republic, is currently neutral in the Russia-Ukraine war, exploiting the conflict to strike new energy deals with Europe and advance its regional interests. The predominantly Turkic Muslim country conquered the predominantly Armenian Christian Republic of Artsakh, or Nagorno-Karabakh, in 2023, with Russia abandoning its traditional role as the Armenians’ protector due to Armenia’s Westward turn and its focus on Ukraine.

Azerbaijan shot down a Russian helicopter, supposedly in error, in 2020, and Aliyev’s demand for compensation replicates Russia’s demands, which Azerbaijan acceded to following that incident.

Pentagon Admits There Are Over 1,000 More U.S. Troops in Syria than Previously Claimed.

The Pentagon has disclosed a significant increase in the number of U.S. troops stationed in Syria, totaling around 2,000 personnel. This figure exceeds previous counts of approximately 900, as reported to the media over recent months. Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Ryder addressed the discrepancy during a briefing on Thursday, claiming that the previously unreported forces are temporary rotational deployments adapting to mission needs, unlike the core contingent on longer missions.

Ryder highlighted that U.S. deployments, including those in Syria, may vary due to diplomatic and operational considerations. These additional forces were present before President Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia as his regime collapsed under the pressure of a jihadist offensive. According to the Pentagon, the U.S. troops are mostly involved in missions aimed to continue diminishing Islamic State (ISIS) capabilities in the region.

The revelation occurs amidst a heightened focus on Syria following Assad’s departure. Turkish military actions against the U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have escalated, posing a threat to security in the region. SDF Commander Gen. Mazloum Abdi cautioned that Kurdish fighters’ potential withdrawal could facilitate an ISIS resurgence. He noted reduced guard numbers at key detention facilities like the Raqqa ISIS prison, emphasizing the growing vulnerability of those sites.

If Kurdish forces, threatened by Turkish hostility, are compelled to retreat by Turkey and its jihadist proxies, U.S. forces may face withdrawal as well.

Italian Deputy PM Salvini Acquitted of Spurious ‘Kidnapping’ Charges for Stopping Illegal Immigration.

Italy’s populist Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has been fully acquitted after being charged by prosecutors for “kidnapping” migrants while protecting his country’s borders from illegal aliens. A court in Palermo, Sicily, ruled in favor of Salvini, leader of the anti-mass migration League (Lega) party after prosecutors accused him of “kidnapping” illegal immigrants trying to reach Italy by ship by refusing to allow them to disembark.

The incident took place in 2019 when Salvini served as Interior Minister in a previous government. It involved Open Arms, a migrant “rescue” non-governmental organization (NGO), which had picked up 147 illegals at sea and tried to drop them off on the Italian island of Lampedusa rather than North Africa.

Salvini’s trial lasted for three years and saw 45 witnesses heard at 24 separate hearings, with prosecutors demanding Salvini face six years in prison. Prosecutors had tried to argue that the protection of human life at sea trumped defending Italy’s borders.

The defense, meanwhile, noted that Open Arms knew it was banned from Italian territorial waters and refused a Spanish offer of a safe port.

“Acquitted for stopping mass immigration and defending my country. The League wins, common sense wins, Italy wins,” Salvini stated following the verdict.

During his tenure as Interior Minister, Salvini managed to slash illegal immigration to Italy considerably. The ‘Salvini Method’ not only led to fewer migrant arrivals but also led to fewer drowning deaths in the Mediterranean Sea, as fewer attempted to make the journey in the first place.

Italy’s current prime minister, Giorgia Meloni of the populist Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, has also sought to work with the European Union and other countries to reduce illegal arrivals, but with less success.

Turkey Prepares to Destroy U.S.-Backed Kurds in Post-Assad Syria.

With Turkey-backed jihadists having ousted Bashar al-Assad in Damascus, Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan is preparing a major offensive in north-eastern Syria, which is controlled by the mostly Kurdish, U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Erdogan, whose country is home to a sizeable Kurdish minority, regards the SDF as allies or an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), designated as a terrorist organization for its armed resistance to Turkish rule.

“We will show that the time has come to neutralize the terrorist organizations present in Syria. We will do this to prevent any further threats coming from the south of our borders,” Erdogan has vowed, warning: “The end of the road for the terrorist organizations is near. There is no room for terrorists in the future of the region. The shelf life of the PKK terrorist organization and its extensions has run out.”

U.S. officials have observed a build-up of Turkish and Turkish-backed militia forces at the Syrian border and are pressing for “restraint,” while Kurdish officials have written to President-elect Donald J. Trump warning of a “catastrophic” Turkish invasion before he can take office.

GEOPOLITICS.

Turkey has been occupying two so-called “buffer zones” in northern Syria for years, directing much of its firepower in the region against Kurdish forces rather than the Islamic State and other Sunni jihadist factions. Indeed, the al-Qaeda franchise that has supplanted Assad in the portion of Syria he formerly controlled, Hayʼat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), is effectively sponsored by the Turkish government.

The destruction of Rojava, as the oil-rich Kurdish-controlled territory in Syria is known, would be a significant embarrassment to the U.S., drastically reducing American influence in the country and threatening Europe with another migration wave.

Meanwhile, Russian bases in the country established under Assad have—so far—been allowed to remain in place by HTS.

Musk Backs German Populists: ‘Only the AfD Can Save Germany.’

Tech mogul Elon Musk believes “Only the AfD can save Germany,” referring to the populist, anti-mass migration Alternative for Germany party. The Donald Trump and Nigel Farage ally offered this endorsement in response to a video posted by Naomi Seibt, a Geman conservative commentator previously dubbed “the anti-Greta Thunberg.”

“Dear Elon, thank you so much for your note,” said AfD co-chairwoman Alice Weidel in a video response to the statement by Musk, who is of partly German descent.

“The Alternative for Germany, the AfD, is indeed the one and only alternative for our country; our last option, if you ask me,” she continued, wishing Musk, President-elect Donald J. Trump, and the American people “a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”

Currently, the AfD is polling well ahead of Germany’s ruling Social Democrats, their junior coalition partners, the Greens, and their former coalition partners, the neoliberal Free Democrats (FDP). However, the AfD is behind the notionally center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), formerly led by Angela Merkel. Additionally, all of Germany’s establishment and far-left parties enforce a so-called cordon sanitaire against the AfD, barring any cooperation with the populist party.

Death Sentence for Child Trafficker Upheld as Court Rejects Final Appeal.

The death sentence for a woman convicted of child trafficking has been confirmed by a court in China. The high-profile case dates back to the 1990s. The Guizhou Provincial High People’s Court on Thursday denied the final appeal of Yu Huaying, a 60-year-old found guilty of trafficking at least 17 children between 1993 and 1996.

Earlier this year, Yu was initially convicted of trafficking 11 children, but a retrial revealed her involvement in the sale of 17 minors. In addition to the death penalty, the court permanently revoked Yu’s political rights and ordered the confiscation of her assets.

Yu’s activities only came to public attention in 2022, when victim Yang Niuhua reported her to authorities in Guiyang. Yang, who was trafficked for 3,500 yuan in 1995, had been searching for her family and shared her experiences online. Her parents had died after her abduction, but she managed to find other relatives.

Yu’s illegal endeavors reportedly began with her own son, whom she sold for 5,000 yuan in the early stages of her criminal activities. She was assisted by her partner, Gong Xianliang, who died shortly after Yu’s arrest, escaping trial.

According to the trial court, Yu operated a “complete criminal chain” across regions, including Guizhou, Yunnan, and Chongqing, selling children through intermediaries in Hebei.

In the United States, child trafficking has become a major issue at the southern border, with thousands of unaccompanied minors being trafficked from Mexico. Around 85,000 children have gone missing after being placed with sponsors by the Biden-Harris regime, some of which are thought to be linked to people trafficking. Overall, as many as 291,000 illegal immigrant children have gone missing under the Biden-Harris regime.

Donald J. Trump pledged to lobby for the federal death penalty to be expanded to human traffickers in 2023, shortly after hosting a screening of the anti-trafficking film Sound of Freedom.

Farage Warns Far-Left UK Govt Trump Team Opposes Giveaway of Strategic Islands.

Brexit leader Nigel Farage has warned British lawmakers that President-elect Donald J. Trump is seriously concerned by the far-left Labour government’s plans to give away the British Indian Ocean Territory to Mauritius. The territory’s islands host a strategic British-American military base.

The Reform Party leader communicated these concerns after discussions at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where he met with Elon Musk and other key figures. During a session in the House of Commons, Farage highlighted the unease within Trump’s forthcoming administration about the long-term implications for the base on Diego Garcia.

“Let me assure you, there is very deep disquiet amongst all of them as to what this may mean for the long-term future of Diego Garcia and whether such a deal would hold, given the precedent of the deal break over Hong Kong,” Farage said. “They also can’t understand why we would surrender the sovereignty of these islands on an advisory judgment for a pretty obscure court,” he added.

Stephen Doughty, a minister in the British Foreign Office, claims the U.S. national security community supports a proposed deal to surrender sovereignty over the Chagos Islands that comprise the territory, claiming a non-binding International Court of Justice ruling that they should be decolonized threatens the future of the base.

MAURITIUS.

The draft plan involves transferring sovereignty to distant Mauritius—against the wishes of the Chagos Islanders the British removed from the territory—while maintaining a 99-year lease for the strategic Diego Garcia base. The base would see Britain make annual payments to Mauritius to facilitate the transfer, and boat migrants present on the islands removed to another British territory.

However, Mauritius’s newly-elected prime minister, Navin Ramgoolam, is already repudiating the agreement, arguing it is not generous enough.

Mauritius is aligned with the Chinese, leading to some fearing that if the deal goes ahead, the Chinese may be able to build their own rival bases on the islands. Farage has also shared similar concerns that giving away the islands will embolden China.

Farage wants a referendum for the Chagos Islanders on the deal.
