Zohran Mamdani, the Democrat candidate for New York City Mayor, is facing backlash following a mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan on Monday that killed four people, including New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer Didarul Islam. While celebrating his wedding in his home country of Uganda, Mamdani released a statement feigning appreciation for first responders. However, social media users soon resurfaced the avowed socialist‘s previous comments supporting defunding the NYPD.

In June 2020, the Twelver Muslim called the NYPD “racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety,” advocating for its defunding. In 2021, he declared, “We can’t reform a system working exactly as designed – to control Black, brown & poor New Yorkers. We need to defund the police… free the thousands locked up unjustly & invest the savings in those most impacted by state violence.”

The gunman in the Midtown shooting, 27-year-old Shane Tamura, killed three people in the lobby, including Officer Islam, before dying by suicide. Tamura left a note citing frustrations with the NFL’s handling of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and its effects on former players.

Officer Islam had served three years with the NYPD. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, “He died as he lived. A hero.”

Mayor Eric Adams stated that the investigation into Tamura’s motives and actions continues.

A police officer in Lorain, Ohio, was killed July 23 in what authorities describe as an ambush-style shooting. Officer Phillip Wagner, 35, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, died after being struck multiple times by gunfire. Two fellow officers, Peter Gale, 51, and Brent Payne, 47, were also shot during the incident, with Payne remaining in critical condition as of the time of publication. The suspected gunman, 28-year-old Michael Parker, was killed during an exchange of fire with law enforcement.

The attack occurred around 1 PM along a dead-end road where Wagner and Gale had reportedly parked after picking up lunch. According to police, Parker had been lying in wait before opening fire. Authorities said that several firearms, magazines, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were found in the suspect’s vehicle.

The violent encounter is part of a trend in the U.S. involving ambushes against law enforcement officers. Statistics indicate that at least 50 officers have been shot in ambush-style attacks in 2025 so far. The annual total could eventually surpass the 80 such incidents recorded in 2024. The peak was in 2023, when 138 ambush-style shootings were reported. Overall, 342 officers were shot in the line of duty last year, up 40 percent compared to 2018, according to the Fraternal Order of Police.

Steven Fioritto, a trustee with the Ohio Fraternal Order of Police, commented on the pattern seen in many of these cases: “A lot of times they describe the person as a loner, but not every loner is going to do that.”

The Federal Bureau of Investgation (FBI) has taken a deeper interest in the rise of these types of attacks. Agents have interviewed both victims and perpetrators in an attempt to understand the motivations behind the violence. FBI trainer Kevin Harris spoke to the daily challenges officers face: “They’ve always got to have that situational awareness, and the unfortunate thing about law enforcement is they’re truly never off duty.”

The Democratic Party has been intensifying its rhetoric against law enforcement involved in deportations, in particular, since President Donald J. Trump’s reelection, with 2024 vice presidential candidate going so far as to describe U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as “Gestapo.”

ICE agents, Border Patrol agents, and regular law enforcement supporting them have been targeted in a number of ambush attacks already this year.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has confirmed that Michael Pulliam, a Washington, D.C. police commander, is under investigation for allegedly doctoring crime statistics. Pemberton described recently released statistics suggesting violent crime is down 28 percent in the American capital as “preposterous,” stressing: “There’s absolutely no way crime could be down 28 percent. Last year, they suggested that it went down 34 percent.”

Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department stated that any irregularities in crime data will be addressed immediately. She claimed that reclassifying criminal offenses outside of MPD policy guidelines is not condoned.

Downtown Los Angeles became the epicenter of pro-illegal immigrant riots earlier this month, with similar protests taking place in other Democrat-controlled cities. These demonstrations were in response to the Trump administration’s increased immigration enforcement efforts in California.

Los Angeles City Controller Kenneth Mejia stated that the riots and protests cost taxpayers over $30 million. Mejia detailed the costs on X, writing, “$29.5 million or 92 percent relates to LAPD’s response to protests against ICE, including citywide tactical alert costs.” An additional $1.4 million went toward clean-up and public property damage.

During the weekend of June 8, rioters in downtown L.A. burned Waymo cars, assaulted police officers, and engaged in mass looting. The violence led the Trump administration to deploy the National Guard to Los Angeles, a move that cost approximately $134 million, to protect U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal personnel who were not being adequately protected by local and state officials while performing their duties.

Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the deployment and filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over the decision. The lawsuit failed, however.

Similar anti-ICE riots occurred in cities like Seattle and Portland, some coinciding with anti-Trump “No Kings” protests. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reported that over 700 arrests were made nationwide in connection with the riots. On June 10 alone, more than 200 arrests took place in Los Angeles after Mayor Karen Bass issued an emergency curfew to curb the looting and vandalism.

President Donald J. Trump has vowed to keep going forward with his deportation policies alongside Border Czar Tom Homan. Trump’s strict immigration policies have significantly reduced illegal entries into the United States, which are down 99.99 percent compared to the Biden era, Homan said in April.

Someone Broke Into Assassinated Minnesota Lawmaker Melissa Hortman’s Home.

The home of slain Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman (D) was broken into on Tuesday evening, prompting law enforcement to establish a security perimeter around the residence. The break-in occurred just three days after Hortman, the former Speaker of the Minnesota state House of Representatives, and her husband, Mark, were murdered by Vance Luther Boelter, a former appointee of Governor Tim Walz (D-MN).

“At 8:00 AM, Brooklyn Park Police were alerted to an overnight break-in at the residence of late State Representative Melissa Hortman,” police stated. “It was discovered that the plywood covering the rear window of the home had been pried off and the window broken to gain entry.”

“The home appeared to have been searched by an unknown individual; however, the family has indicated that they don’t believe anything is missing,” the police statement continued, emphasizing that “all evidence related to the homicides had been collected” before the burglary.

The fact that the home had been searched by an unknown person or persons has renewed speculation among the public that Boelter, 57, may not have acted alone. A former state board appointee of Gov. Walz, Boelter visited the homes of at least four Minnesota lawmakers in the early hours of June 14, disguised as a law enforcement officer. Hortman and her husband were shot and killed, while State Senator John Hoffman (D) and his wife, Yvette, were both critically wounded in another shooting. The other two lawmakers, whose identities have not been made public, were not at home when Boelter arrived.

Law enforcement apprehended Boelter late Sunday night, following what officials described as the largest manhunt in Minnesota’s history. He now faces both state and federal charges, some of which could carry the death penalty if he is convicted.

Police in one of Europe’s largest countries now fear they may be subject to prosecution for enforcing border policies after a court declared that the deportation of several Somali nationals at the border was illegal. The Administrative Court of Berlin in Germany declared that the rejection of three Somalis at a border control at Frankfurt train station was illegal, contrary to the government’s new border control policy.

Federal police union chairman Andreas RoĂźkopf now fears that police could personally face prosecution for enforcing the border controls. “Of course, it is a case-by-case decision at first, but it remains to be noted that these are cases that we have every day, and so there is now a certain uncertainty among colleagues,” he said. “The directive must be implemented, but the liability of colleagues must be explicitly removed in the end,” RoĂźkopf added.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt ordered stricter border controls to be implemented in May, but the ruling could undo those orders. Others in the federal government have suggested the policies may be reworked to comply with the ruling and European Union (EU) laws.

Germany has long been the major destination in Europe for asylum seekers, although this year it appeared that France had surpassed Germany for the number of overall applications. Before the more restrictive border policy, Germany saw several mass stabbing attacks carried out by asylum seekers from countries like Syria and Afghanistan. The country has seen several terrorist attacks as well, many of which have been committed by asylum seekers who have arrived since the 2015 migration crisis.

Migration has also rapidly changed the country’s demographics, with around one-third of young adults in Germany now coming from migration backgrounds.

Illegal Aliens Escape Federal Facility, Local Authorities Refuse to Assist.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) says local law enforcement in Aurora, Colorado, refused to assist them after two illegal immigrants escaped from a detention facility located near the city during a power outage. According to ICE officials, Joel Jose Gonzalez-Gonzalez, 32, and Geilond Vido-Romero, 24, fled the Denver Contract Detention Facility late Tuesday when the facility experienced an unexpected power failure. After discovering the absence of the detainees during a routine check, federal immigration officers notified local law enforcement, who declined to assist with a broader community search.

While additional state and federal law enforcement agencies were also notified, both illegal immigrant escapees remain at large, and the search efforts continue. Aurora Police Department claims that ICE did not contact them until several hours after the two illegal immigrants escaped, insisting, “This was a cold event from the time we were notified.”

“As a municipal law enforcement agency, we do not enforce federal immigration law and cannot engage in larger-scale searches or follow-ups,” they added.

Vido-Romero, the younger of the two, had been detained by ICE the previous month following local charges in Castle Rock. He had illegally entered the U.S. via Eagle Pass, Texas, in December 2023, and was awaiting deportation to Venezuela. Gonzalez-Gonzalez, who entered the U.S. through El Paso, Texas, in February 2013, was detained by federal authorities last month after being held at the Adams County Jail in Brighton on local charges. He was awaiting immigration proceedings at the time of his escape from the ICE facility.

Police Forcefully Clear Theater Occupied by Hundreds of Migrants for Months.

Police have used batons and tear gas to clear a theater that hundreds of illegal migrants had been occupying for months after being invited in and then refusing to leave. Paris police emptied the building of the illegal squatters on March 18 after months of occupation, meeting stiff resistance from both the migrants and their activist supporters.

Located in the center of Paris, France, around 450 young migrants decided to make the Gaîté Lyrique theater their home after being invited into the building in mid-December. When police arrived at the venue, activists attempted to form a human chain to prevent them from entering but were pushed back by officers who used tear gas.

The entire ordeal began after around 250 migrants were invited to take part in a pro-migrant conference involving academics and far-left activists. However, the number of migrants soon increased to over 450, with those who run the theater noting just weeks into the occupation that it could lead to the entire venue going bankrupt.

The theater management said that while the occupation was ongoing, no revenue could be made from performances, and the migrants had potentially cost the theater hundreds of thousands of euros in lost revenue. Local businesses also complained of losing money due to the migrants.

Several D.C.-Area Police Departments Say They Won’t Assist With Trump Inauguration Security: Report.

Several Washington, D.C., metro-area police departments say they will not assist the capital city with security measures for President-elect Donald J. Trump’s inauguration on Monday. A disagreement over the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has led to around a half-dozen local law enforcement agencies declining to provide support for the high-security event—likely depriving the city of hundreds of additional officers.

“I was just told that based on the current MOU, we will not be assisting Metro PD,” a spokesman for Maryland’s Montgomery County Police Department said regarding the decision. Joining Mongomery County are several other Maryland police departments, including those for Howard and Queen Anne’s Counties and the Frederick County Sheriff’s Department.

Meanwhile, Maryland’s Anne Arundel and Prince George’s police departments stress that they will be sending officers to aid the U.S. Capitol Police but not the MPD. Washington, D.C.’s MPD has been plagued with scandal in recent years, especially regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and ineffective, soft-on-crime arrest policies. It appears other departments, troubled by these measures, are unwilling to work with the MPD specifically.

However, the MPD’s lack of outside assistance may only impact auxiliary security measures, as the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) and U.S. Capitol Police are the primary leads on security for the inauguration. Additionally, the deployment of National Guard units around the capital will serve to bolster the overall security environment.

The National Pulse previously reported that the Secret Service and Capitol Police are especially concerned with planned demonstrations and potential lone-wolf attackers. Notably, due to forecasted severe cold temperatures, the inauguration has been moved inside the U.S. Capitol, which should provide an additional layer of protection.

NOLA Police Superintendent Has Raked in Almost $3 Million from Taxpayers.

Following the New Year’s Day terror attack in New Orleans, Louisiana, that left 14 dead, it has emerged that Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick is paid almost $340,000 and has raked in millions of dollars from the American taxpayer since 2017. Reporters questioned her competence following the attack, with no vehicle barriers having been in place. “Actually, we have them,” she admitted. “I didn’t know about them, but we have them, and so we have been able now to put them out”—too late to prevent the Islamic State-inspired attack.

Kirkpatrick, who has a background with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and has served in police departments in Chicago, Oakland, and five other cities, joined the New Orleans police in September 2023 with a salary of $337,943, making her the second-highest paid city employee. Since 2017, she has earned $2.97 million from taxpayers, including salaries and legal settlements.

The barriers police failed to deploy were purchased in 2017 and used to protect pedestrians on previous occasions. Their manufacturer described how they “allowed free pedestrian flow and emergency vehicle access through the streets while providing a solid perimeter to unwanted vehicles.” The fact pedestrians were unprotected on New Year’s Day because police leaders forgot they had them raises serious questions about whether their high salaries provide good value for money for taxpayers.

RECORD.

Before her tenure in New Orleans, Kirkpatrick was the chief of police in Oakland, California, starting in January 2017 with an initial salary of $250,003, which increased to $334,090 by 2019. Her tenure in Oakland ended controversially when she was dismissed without cause in February 2020. Kirkpatrick sued for wrongful termination, claiming she was let go for exposing corruption within the Oakland Police Commission. A federal jury sided with her in 2022, awarding her $1.5 million in damages, which included a year’s salary and legal fees.

Her career also took her to various cities, including Memphis and the Chicago Police Department’s Bureau of Professional Standards. For five months in 2016, she earned $79,652.

New Orleans, under Kirkpatrick’s leadership, saw 193 homicides in 2023, leading the nation with a rate of 53.8 per 100,000 people. In 2024, violent crimes numbered 2,408, with 120 homicides, which would rank fourth worst in the country based on 2023 data.
