Late Sunday evening, violent leftist protestors laid siege to the front entrance of the Home2 Suites Hotel on University Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Federal agents, hotel security, and several Minneapolis police officers were filmed defending the building’s entrance. However, the local police response appeared sparse, with arrests only being made after a federal law enforcement officer was bloodied from being hit by a projectile.

Video footage shows demonstrators at first attempting to violently force their way through the hotel’s front doors, with police using a metal cabinet to try to barricade the entrance. It is reported that tear gas and other chemical irritants were used to clear the crowd before two federal officers took positions at the hotel entrance, and protestors largely backed down.


The hotel was targeted as anti-ICE protestors believed it to be housing a number of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. By late Sunday evening, protestors had been moved a block down the street, while federal officers manned the entrance, and a ring of press around the entrance filmed the situation and the damage.


According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, “The Minnesota State Patrol and DNR were called to assist Minneapolis police with damage to hotel property at Home2 Suites Hotel on University Avenue. While they collaboratively worked to encircle the group for arrests because the demonstration was not peaceful, federal agents arrived without communication and deployed chemical irritants, clearing the group.”


The attack on the Home2 Suites Hotel comes amid rising tensions in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, an anti-ICE demonstrator and ICU nurse. Witnesses claim Pretti was sprayed with an irritant, pushed to the ground, and beaten before agents removed a firearm from his waistband and fired several shots, killing him.

The chaotic incident has drawn intense scrutiny, with President Donald J. Trump dispatching border czar Tom Homan to Minneapolis to assess the situation.

According to a report released by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) on Tuesday, the total number of line-of-duty deaths dropped from 148 in 2024 to 111 in 2025, with decreases seen across every fatality type tracked by the organization.

Notably, the last time annual law enforcement fatalities were as low as 2025 was in 1943. Ninety-four police officers were killed in the line of duty that year. The NLEOMF data reveals that firearm-related officer deaths declined by 15 percent last year to 44 recorded fatalities, compared to 52 in 2024. This is the lowest rate in over a decade, according to NLEOMF’s historical records.

“I always like to see that firearm deaths are down. They are the tip of the spear for egregious acts,” said Bill Alexander, the NLEOMF’s chief executive officer. He added, “Even one officer fatality is too many, and our ultimate goal is to have none. But we’re heartened by any decrease in those numbers.”

Meanwhile, the report shows traffic-related deaths declined by 23 percent in 2025, and fatalities categorized as “other”—including medical emergencies, stabbings, drownings, and aviation accidents—dropped by 37 percent, from 52 to 33 year-to-year. This number includes 14 law enforcement officers who died from long-term medical complications stemming from the 9/11 terrorist attacks 25 years ago.

Shortly after the terrorist group’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the city government in Dearborn Heights—led by Mayor Abdullah Hammoud—erected two Palestinian flags flanking the city’s welcome sign. Some saw the move as an endorsement of Hamas’s action.
