An impending ‘riot‘ in London, organized on the Chinese-owned social media app TikTok, is forcing the Metropolitan Police to ramp up patrols and deploy dozens of officers to the city center over the next 24 hours.
A post titled “Oxford Circus JD Robbery” appeared on TikTok earlier this week, encouraging people to participate in an “organized mass shoplifting event” on Wednesday, August 9, on Oxford Street – London’s main shopping district. The post featured the phrase, “Don’t come if you can’t run,” and even a dress code for the participants.
The London police force took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce their efforts to increase security in the area, stating, “we are aware of online speculation about opportunities to commit crime around Oxford Street… [a]nyone committing a crime can expect to be dealt with robustly.” The police have also put a dispersal order in place allowing authorities to arrest anyone who does not comply.
Far-left London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, too, said in a statement: “I’d encourage anybody who’s seen it not to go to Oxford Street. Do not allow yourself to be sucked into an area that could be [a] high crime area.”
