A frontline mechanic who uses the call sign “Hammer” has revealed Ukraine’s counteroffensive would not be possible without captured Russian vehicles. Hammer, who is the head of weapons and maintenance for the 35th Marine Brigade, stated that troops fighting in southern Ukraine have been using captured weapons and armor out of necessity.
He reports that without the Russian vehicles, Ukrainian forces would not be able to continue their operation. Over the past six weeks, his brigade has captured more than 20 Russian vehicles, including T-72 tanks and multi-purpose fighting vehicles.
Last week, Deutsche Welle reported that since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine over 17 months ago, Kiev has recovered over 800 enemy artillery systems and 300 tanks and put them back into use on the battlefield.
Colonel Oleksandr Saruba, who works for a Ukrainian military center analyzing captured weaponry, quipped that Russia is now competing with Western countries to supply weapons to Ukraine.
