President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, has been indicted on felony gun charges by special counsel David Weiss. This indictment adds further legal pressure on Hunter Biden, as a plea agreement he had previously struck with prosecutors fell apart.
The plea agreement, which would have allowed Hunter Biden to plead guilty to misdemeanor tax offenses and enter a pretrial diversion program, collapsed during a court hearing in July due to concerns raised by U.S. Judge Maryellen Noreika about its structure and an immunity deal.
Attorney General Merrick Garland subsequently elevated Weiss to special counsel, granting him expanded authority to bring charges against Hunter Biden. Hunter Biden’s legal team contends that the pretrial diversion agreement remains valid, while Weiss’s team argues that it is null and void as the probation officer did not sign it.
Further charges, including the two misdemeanor tax offenses, are expected to be withdrawn in Delaware and brought to California and Washington, D.C., where the alleged misconduct occurred. It remains unclear when these charges will be filed. Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has announced his plan to initiate an impeachment inquiry against President Biden over his alleged involvement in his son’s influence-peddling. The White House has dismissed this move as “extreme politics,” asserting that the president has not engaged in any wrongdoing.
