Hundreds of Muslims shut down central London after gathering to protest Israel’s supposed involvement in the explosion at the al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City on Tuesday evening, which is now believed to have been caused by Hamas in a botched rocket launch attempt.
The gathering took place in front of Downing Street – home of the British Prime Minister – and stretched almost the entirety of Whitehall, the United Kingdom’s political quarter, situated yards from the Houses of Parliament.
Those in attendance demanded an end to the “massacre” of Palestinians and accused Israel of genocide, while waving Palestinian flags. Others sang, “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” The crowd, predominantly comprised of young men, also stopped to pray, being led by an Imam who repeatedly chanted “Allah hu Akbar”.
One protestor, who claimed to be half-Palestinian, explained, “We are here to mourn everyone who has died in the last week, and since the beginning of the [Israeli] occupation.”
Similar events have occurred across Europe after Hamas’ violent incursion into Israel earlier this month, with many, such as in the German capital of Berlin, becoming violent and targeting local Jewish residents.
