An emergency evacuation occurred at New York’s State Supreme Court Building on Wednesday afternoon after a brief fire caused by an unnamed individual set off fire alarms. The man was arrested for igniting documents within the courthouse, according to court spokesperson Al Baker. Firefighters arrived at the Lower Manhattan landmark shortly after 4 p.m. to extinguish a small blaze, resulting in a brief but visible haze spreading through the third and fourth-floor stairwell.
The historic courthouse, often recognizable from television shows and films like “Law & Order” and “Night Court,” has been the setting for former President Donald Trump’s civil business fraud trial for almost three months. The evacuation took place several hours after the day’s testimony had wrapped up.
No injuries were reported and those evacuated, including presiding Judge Arthur Engoron, could re-enter the building shortly after. Trump was not present in the courthouse during the evacuation. The legal teams in the trial are set to present their closing arguments in the coming month. The police are reportedly investigating.
