Prime Minister Andy Burnham has agreed that AI presents a threat to national security, as another AI researcher from Anthropic has warned that the technology could wipe out humanity.

❓ WHAT HAPPENED: British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has agreed with artificial intelligence (AI) researchers warning that the technology threatens national security, as another safety researcher from Anthropic has warned that AI could kill all humans. 📺 DETAIL: On Wednesday, Evan Hubinger, a safety researcher at Anthropic, issued a warning on X (formerly Twitter) that current efforts to align AI with human safety are insufficient and that Anthropic, which makes Claude, lacks a clear plan to address the dangers posed by newer models. Hubinger also warned that there is a greater-than-ten-percent chance of mankind’s extinction within the next decade. Prime Minister Burnham agreed that AI poses “risks to national security,” but defended the capabilities of the new technology. “Hubinger is absolutely right that AI poses risks to our national security, but it also could be the source of solutions to keeping us safer,” said the Labour Party leader. Hubinger’s warning coincides with the resignation of Jacob Coxon, another Anthropic researcher, who recently accused Anthropic and other companies of developing AI irresponsibly. “The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. No other human activity poses this level of danger,” warned Coxon. This also follows Claude AI, Anthropic’s flagship AI model, being withdrawn from the United Kingdom’s AI Safety Institute, a leading body for testing new models. 💬 KEY QUOTE: “We really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.” – Evan Hubinger 🎯 IMPACT: Hubinger’s comments show that current employees of Anthropic share Coxon’s concerns. This reinforces the idea that AI development is outpacing the implementation of safety measures. 📺 FLASHBACK: Coxon resigned on Wednesday in a seven-part post on X, which garnered millions of views. “I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives,” posted Coxon. |
Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to. https://t.co/QAIHiFP3QZ
