Aides to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis have led a purge of the state’s top law enforcement agency after pushback over an attempt to block a lawsuit seeking the release of records related to the Governor’s taxpayer-funded travel and security detail. Officials with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) clashed with the Governor’s office, arguing there were legal grounds to hand over at least some of the records. The Governor’s staff, known for having little toleration for disagreement, responded by removing the FDLE dissenters.
At the heart of the dispute between Governor DeSantis‘s office and the FDLE is a new Florida law which shields the governor’s travel records from the public, including the media. The law was part of a package of bills passed by the Florida legislature this past spring, which DeSantis used to increase his power while shielding himself from public scrutiny.

Top staff at the FDLE argued the disclosure law did not prevent them from handing over basic cost records in compliance with public requests. Aides for DeSantis responded to the FDLE’s position by blocking the promotion of at least one dissenting attorney in the agency, as well as pushing out the FDLE’s deputy chief of staff Patricia Carpenter and chief of staff Shane Desguin.
Despite the Governor’s position arguing the law essentially shields almost all details about his travel and security detail from the public, the Republican sponsor of the statute says this was not his intent. State Rep. Jeff Holcomb says the law was simply intended to prevent individuals from constructing a ‘security profile’ of the Florida Governor using sensitive travel and security information. Preventing the public from obtaining basic information such as the taxpayer cost of the Governor’s security detail was not the end goal, he explained.

Consumer retail spending dropped in April, partly because consumers frontloaded purchases ahead of President Trump’s reciprocal tariffs taking effect. However, the slowdown in retail purchases also suggests that there is ongoing downward pressure on demand, giving strong support to the idea that inflation has subsided but has been replaced by deflation.
Retail sales in April rose by only 0.1 percent after a surge in purchases in March, where sales rose by 1.7 percent. The minor positive growth was almost entirely buoyed by restaurant and bar purchases, with retail, hobby, and miscellaneous stores all reporting negative growth of over one percent. Gasoline sales at stations fell by half a percent.
The deflation signals in the retail sales numbers are further backed by a surprising Producer Price Index (PPI) number from April. The PPI, which measures price changes before reaching consumers, dropped 0.5 percent compared to March, according to data released Thursday by the U.S. Labor Department. This represents the largest monthly decrease since 2018.
Critics of President Trump’s tariffs predicted that the PPI would rise, fueled by higher tariff costs. This, they contended, would be a form of inflation. Notably, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has taken a similar line, suggesting that the Federal Reserve has been hesitant to cut interest rates as they believe the Trump tariffs to be inflationary in impact—which has so far proven to be incorrect.
By not cutting interest rates at the last two Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meetings, the Federal Reserve likely made a grave error and may need to resort to emergency measures to head off a deflationary spiral, which could portend an economic recession.
Since the start of 2025, President Trump has repeatedlycalled on Powell and his colleagues at the Federal Reserve to reduce rates.

Democrat California Governor Gavin Newsom has unveiled a proposal to freeze new illegal alien adult enrollments in the state’s Medicaid program, Medi-Cal, starting no earlier than January 1, 2026. The freeze would apply to new adult applicants over the age of 19—but would not remove current enrollees from the program.
In addition, Newsom has proposed a $100 monthly premium for Medi-Cal participants aged 19 and older with “unsatisfactory immigration status.” This category includes individuals whose immigration status disqualifies them from federally funded Medicaid, encompassing both illegal immigrants and those with lawful status. The premium would take effect on January 1, 2027.
The governor’s office has attributed these measures to fiscal challenges, attempting to blame President Donald J. Trump’s trade policies. “Trump’s pendulum swings on tariffs have slowed the economy and weakened state revenues by a staggering $16 billion,” the document alleges. In fact, the America First leader’s tariffs have generated $16 billion in additional revenue nationally, slashing the federal budget deficit.
