Joe Biden drew a handful of attendees to a campaign event at Mary Mac’s Tea Room in downtown Atlanta on Saturday. The event was part of an ongoing effort to communicate with black voters, who have backed Democratic presidential candidates en masse for decades but are increasingly turning away from Biden. The modest turnout in Atlanta indicates a potentially limited reach.
During the gathering, Biden appeared visibly disoriented at times. Attendees reacted to the 81-year-old Democrat’s strange behavior with a mixture of embarrassment, sympathy, and amusement.

The presidential motorcade also drew few onlookers in the Georgia capital. Donald Trump supporters have contrasted Biden’s star power, or lack thereof, with that of his predecessor, who recently drew around 80,000 people to a rally in Wildwood, New Jersey — a state that has not voted Republican since 1988.
There is a huge enthusiasm gap between Trump and Biden, even in reliably Democratic states. Seventy percent of New Yorkers believe the incumbent is unfit to hold the presidency, and only 48 percent of New York Democrats say they want him as their candidate. Trump, in contrast, is the favored candidate of 61 percent of Empire State Republicans.
Enthusiasm for Biden is falling particularly fast among the minorities he was trying to reach in Atlanta. An estimated 92 percent of blacks voted for the Democrat in 2020, but his support is now down to 62 percent. Trump’s black support, eight percent in 2020, now stands at 21 percent.
Biden is also trailing Trump among Hispanics, who have voted majority Democratic in every election for over 40 years.
