Representative Jamaal Bowman of New York, a member of the House’s far-left “squad” and a vocal critic of Israel, has been defeated in the Democratic primary by Westchester County Executive George Latimer.
Bowman, who attracted national attention when he “accidentally” pulled a fire alarm in order to delay a vote in Congress, saw a record-breaking $16 million spent to unseat him.
Latimer, benefiting from robust financial backing, framed his campaign as a return to moderate politics.
The race highlighted the waning influence of progressive groups within the district. High-profile endorsements and campaign efforts from figures like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders were not enough to counteract the well-funded opposition Bowman faced.
Latimer is poised to easily win the general election in the overwhelmingly Democratic district in November. The impact of the Bowman primary defeat could extend beyond just him. Pro-Israel groups are now looking to target other far-left incumbents, such as Representative Cori Bush of Missouri.
