Ukraine Helped Train Rebranded al-Qaeda in Syria.

Ukrainian media sources report that the U.S.-funded Ukrainian military and security apparatus trained the Islamist rebels currently advancing in Syria. Turkey-backed Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), formerly the al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra, is leading the offensive against the forces of Russia-backed President Bashar al-Assad in Aleppo, seizing swathes of territory.

According to Ukrainian media, the rebels received operational training from the Khimik group of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR), mainly relating to drone use.

Al-Nusra Front counts the first leader of the Islamic State terrorist group, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as one of its founders. Footage on social media allegedly shows HTS fighters wearing Islamic State flag patches.

Both al-Nusra and Islamic State have infamously oppressed and murdered Christians in Syria and Iraq, including cases of kidnapping and torture. According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), HTS killed hundreds of civilians from 2012 to 2021.

The Ukrainian military, alongside Turkey, supports the HTS campaign, which is primarily directed at the forces of President Assad and his Russian, Iranian, and Hezbollah allies.

Russia, meanwhile, began a counterattack over the weekend, using airpower to bomb HTS and other rebel positions. The Syrian army claims to have regained some lost ground.

After the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine in 2022, Islamic State radicals called on supporters to take advantage of the war and carry out attacks on Russia.

Islamist terrorists have also used Ukraine as a means to access Europe and plot terror attacks by claiming to be Ukrainian refugees, according to Germany’s spy agency.

Following the fatal shooting, Byrd saw no disciplinary action whatsoever and was even granted over $36,000 in retention funds after the killing. He was also provided with a security detail and temporary lodging at a military facility.

Under the terms of the agreement, Regeneron, based in Tarrytown, New York, will continue to provide 23andMe’s consumer genetic services without interruption. The company also emphasized its commitment to adhering to 23andMe’s existing privacy policies and applicable laws to safeguard sensitive customer information.

“We have deep experience with large-scale data management,” said George Yancopoulos, Regeneron’s co-founder, in a statement. He added: “With the consent of individuals, we use this data to drive discoveries that benefit science and society, while maintaining a strong track record of protecting genetic data.”

Privacy concerns have surrounded 23andMe’s vast database, which includes the DNA information of approximately 15 million customers. The British beverage giant Diageo, owner of Guinness and Johnnie Walker, has flagged a $150 million annual hit to its profits, claiming this will be due to U.S. tariffs introduced under President Donald J. Trump. However, the company’s newest estimate, released on Monday, is a significant decrease from the expected $200 million loss it projected earlier this year.

It is unclear whether Diageo’s estimate includes provisions laid out in the new landmark bilateral trade agreement signed earlier this month between the United States and the United Kingdom, or if the loss is based mainly on the revenue impact of the 10 percent global tariff imposed by President Trump on April 2, 2025. Notably, President Trump paused higher, country-specific reciprocal tariffs for 90 days in mid-April. However, the recent U.S.-UK trade deal would preclude additional trade duties from being imposed on British exports once the pause expires.

Diageo’s recent shareholder update noted that its tequila and Canadian whiskey brands remain exempt from these levies, and tariffs on U.S.-China trade have had minimal impact on its operations.
