A deadly New Year’s terror attack in New Orleans’ French Quarter has left at least 10 dead alongside dozens of injuries.
The suspect, who fired upon officers, is deceased, according to an FBI statement. He has now been named as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, and is believed to have been carrying the black flag of the Islamic State (ISIS) with him.
Jabbar is believed to have been heavily armed, with explosives also in his possession. He was shot and killed by New Orleans police before managing to detonate his Ford F-150 truck. Initial reports suggested Jabbar may have entered the country illegally through the southern border, though subsequent reports suggest he is an American citizen. At least three other accomplices are now being investigated.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Ann Kirkpatrick stated that the driver, at approximately 3:15 a.m., maneuvered a Ford F-150 pickup truck down Bourbon Street at high speed with clear intent. “This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could,” she said. Kirkpatrick emphasized that this was not a case of driving under the influence but rather a deliberate act.
The suspect also fired from his vehicle during the event and when it crashed, injuring two officers who are currently in stable condition. The FBI is now leading the investigation into the incident, with President Joe Biden being briefed and support being offered to New Orleans by the White House.
Incoming President Donald Trump issued a statement Wednesday morning:
“When I said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by Democrats and the Fake News Media, but it turned out to be true. The crime rate in our country is at a level that nobody has ever seen before. Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department. The Trump Administration will fully support the City of New Orleans as they investigate and recover from this act of pure evil!”
Authorities are examining a suspected improvised explosive device found at the location. The tragedy occurred hours before the Sugar Bowl, scheduled at the local Superdome.
