Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) says disgraced serial perjurer Michael Cohen has likely sunk Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s prosecution of former President Donald J. Trump. Cohen imploded on the witness stand yesterday under cross-examination by Trump’s lead defense counsel, Todd Blanche.
“Michael Cohen in this circumstance was dog-walked through a jungle of lies, but the biggest lie he told — he was caught lying on the stand,” Gaetz said during an interview on Fox News. He continued: “Because he never spoke to Trump about the closure of this deal he supposedly orchestrated, and the jury was aghast.”
“And even the jurors who I think want to convict Trump walked out of that courtroom with their shoulders slumped because they knew Michael Cohen blew this case up. Anyone who relies on Cohen, they lose,” he added. Gaetz traveled with Trump to New York City on Thursday and was present in the courtroom for Michael Cohen‘s day-long cross-examination.
Cohen testified that he had spoken with former President Trump, confirming a nondisclosure payment to Stormy Daniels had been made. The conversation, according to Cohen, occurred over a phone call that was originally between Trump’s bodyguard, Keith Schiller, and himself. However, during Thursday’s cross-examination of Cohen, Trump’s lead defense counsel, Todd Blanche, effectively dismantled the story. Blanche presented the jury with text and phone records indicating Cohen had called Schiller to discuss a 14-year-old prank caller who had been harassing Cohen — not to speak with Donald Trump.
On the witness stand, Cohen was unable to explain the discrepancy — meaning it is likely that, once again, the disgraced and disbarred attorney has perjured himself.
