Joe Biden has authorized the deployment of an additional Patriot missile system to Ukraine, according to senior administration and military officials. This decision was made last week following a series of high-level discussions and debates on how to address Ukraine’s urgent need for enhanced air defenses without compromising U.S. combat readiness.
The new system, which marks the second Patriot battery sent to Ukraine by the United States, will be sourced from Poland. The Patriot system in Poland had been safeguarding a rotational contingent of American troops who are now set to return to the U.S. U.S. officials indicated that, depending on maintenance or required modifications, the system could be deployed to Ukraine’s front lines within the next few days.
The Patriot missile system, regarded as one of the United States’ most effective air defense platforms, features an advanced radar system and mobile launchers designed to engage incoming threats. Despite its efficacy, the Patriot is among the most limited resources in the U.S. arsenal. The Pentagon has not disclosed the exact number of these systems, but a senior military official noted that the Army has only 14 deployed domestically and internationally.
Despite the supply of advanced U.S. weapons systems, the Ukrainian military has continued to struggle under sustained Russian attacks. The National Pulse reported in May that the Russian military has been able to render much of the high-tech weaponry provided to Ukraine obsolete through the use of jamming technology. As a result, Ukraine has become increasingly reliant on off-the-shelf Chinese drones purchased using American taxpayer dollars.
