Raphael Glucksmann, a member of France’s left-wing Place Publique party, called for the United States to return the Statue of Liberty during a speech on Sunday.
This demand stemmed from his criticism of the U.S. approach towards the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Glucksmann, a firm supporter of Ukraine, addressed the issue during a party convention. “Return the Statue of Liberty,” he insisted, as reported by Agence France-Presse. He contended that the United States had strayed from the values symbolized by the statue, gifted by France in 1884 to celebrate Franco-American relations.
In his address, Glucksmann criticized President Trump’s domestic and international policies, which include withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement, which Trump achieved through executive order shortly after resuming office in January. He pointed to Trump’s alliance with entrepreneur Elon Musk, who Glucksmann accused of reducing commitments to health and climate research.
“We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently you despise it. So, it will be just fine here at home,” Glucksmann added.
Unveiled on October 28, 1886, the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States, symbolizing the enduring friendship between the two nations and their shared values of freedom and democracy.
Designed by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with engineering assistance from Gustave Eiffel, the statue stands over 305 feet tall on Liberty Island in New York Harbor.
Over the years, it has undergone several restorations, notably from 1984 to 1986, to address structural issues and preserve its iconic appearance.
