NATO Chief Admits Europe, Canada Must Equalize U.S. Defense Contribution.

PULSE POINTS:

What Happened: NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has urged alliance members to increase defense spending, suggesting the current two percent GDP target is insufficient.

👥 Who’s Involved: NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, British Defence Secretary John Healey, and former U.S. President Donald J. Trump.

📍 Where & When: Press conference on Wednesday; NATO leaders to meet in The Hague later this month.

💬 Key Quote: “The expectation is that on the European side of NATO and the Canadian side of NATO, if we think that we can keep ourselves safe sticking with the two percent, forget it.” – Mark Rutte.

⚠️ Impact: NATO nations may face increased pressure to raise their defense budgets, with potential calls for spending as high as five percent of GDP.

IN FULL:

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has called on alliance members to significantly increase defense spending, arguing that the current two percent GDP target is inadequate for maintaining security. Speaking at a press conference on June 4, Rutte emphasized the need for European NATO members and Canada to contribute more, aligning their efforts with the United States, which currently spends around 3.4 percent of its GDP on defense.

“The expectation is that on the European side of NATO and the Canadian side of NATO, if we think that we can keep ourselves safe sticking with the two percent, forget it,” Rutte stated. He warned that sticking to the current target could leave member nations in “great difficulty” within the next three to five years.

The former Dutch prime minister is reportedly advocating for a new spending target of 3.5 percent of GDP on military expenditures, with an additional 1.5 percent allocated to defense-related measures. The issue is expected to be a central topic when NATO leaders convene in The Hague later this month, where a new “investment plan” will be discussed.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has pledged to raise British defense spending to 2.5 percent of GDP by April 2027, with a longer-term goal of reaching three percent in the next parliament, potentially extending to 2034. However, Starmer and Defence Secretary John Healey are under scrutiny over how this target will be achieved.

Healey defended the United Kingdom’s contributions to NATO, citing recent investments. “We’ve published a defense review that has NATO at its heart,” he claimed, highlighting £4 billion allocated for drone technology and £1 billion for laser weapons development. He also noted the United Kingdom’s unique role in contributing to nuclear deterrence for the alliance.

U.S. President Donald J. Trump and his NATO representative, Matthew Whitaker, have previously called for alliance members to commit to a five percent GDP defense spending target. This push underscores ongoing debates about equitable burden-sharing within NATO, where the U.S. pulls the lion’s share of the military weight.

Trump has long advocated for NATO members to spend more on their militaries. However, few countries even meet prior spending commitments, let alone potential new ones that may be even higher.

📍 WHEN & WHERE: The incident occurred at 15th Street and Independence Avenue in Washington, D.C., on Monday.
💬 KEY QUOTE: “U.S. Secret Service personnel are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting at 15th Street and Independence Avenue in Washington, D.C. One individual was shot by law enforcement; their condition is currently unknown,” the Secret Service stated.
🎯 IMPACT: The shooting led to heightened security measures in the area, including a White House lockdown, underscoring the ongoing challenges of maintaining security in the nation’s capital. Notably, an event involving President Donald J. Trump and small business owners took place as planned, although journalists at the White House were taken to a briefing room for safety.

Trump Plans Further Troop Reductions in Europe.

President Donald J. Trump’s plan to cut U.S. troop levels in Europe beyond an initial 5,000-man withdrawal from Germany could face resistance from Congress.

PULSE POINTS
❓ WHAT HAPPENED: President Donald J. Trump has announced plans to significantly reduce U.S. troop levels in Europe, exceeding the 5,000-troop withdrawal already ordered from Germany on Friday.
📺 DETAIL: On Saturday, President Donald J. Trump announced his intention to significantly reduce the presence of U.S. troops in Europe, exceeding the 5,000 initially withdrawn from Germany on Friday. The withdrawal of 5,000 troops is scheduled to take place over the next six to 12 months, according to the Pentagon. The President’s mention of “cutting a lot further than 5,000” comes as the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2026 introduces a binding provision that prevents the Pentagon from cutting the number of U.S. troops in Europe below 76,000 for more than 45 days, and requires the Pentagon to certify that troop reductions below 76,000 in Europe will not harm U.S. or NATO security.
💬 KEY QUOTE:We’re going to cut way down. And we’re cutting a lot further than 5,000.” — President Donald J. Trump.
🎯 IMPACT: While the current withdrawal is nowhere near the 76,000 threshold, the President’s comments suggest the threshold could become more relevant. The move follows the administration’s growing frustration with Europe, including its reluctance to cooperate during the Iran war, which has compounded longstanding concerns about Europe’s reliance on the U.S. for protection while failing to make adequate NATO contributions. The withdrawal of troops reflects decisions made during the first Trump administration. In 2020, the President ordered the withdrawal of 12,000 troops from Germany, citing the country’s insufficient NATO contributions. The new withdrawal allows the U.S. to shift its military resources to other zones of interest.

Nigerian Rams Car into ICE Agents, Protest Erupts.

Federal immigration agents arrested a Nigerian national at a Brooklyn hospital, triggering a chaotic protest that led to multiple arrests and property damage.

PULSE POINTS
❓ WHAT HAPPENED: Federal agents arrested Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian national, after he tried to hit them with his vehicle and resisted arrest. After Okeke was transported to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York City, for medical evaluation, a protest of roughly 200 people outside the hospital descended into chaos.
📺 DETAIL: On Saturday, Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian national, attempted to drive his vehicle into Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents following a targeted arrest. Okeke had overstayed his tourist visa from 2023, which expired in 2024. He had previously been arrested for assault and criminal drug possession. After attempting to resist arrest, Okeke was detained by ICE and taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York City, for medical evaluation. In the early hours of Sunday, a mob of roughly 200 people gathered outside the hospital, blocking the exits and traffic. The mob damaged vehicles, smashing the back windshield of an ICE vehicle, and clashed with officers, who suffered injuries. Eight arrests were made; charges ranged from resisting arrest to criminal mischief to obstructing governmental administration.
💬 KEY QUOTE: “During his arrest, Okeke refused to comply with officers’ lawful commands to exit the vehicle and weaponized his vehicle to attempt to hit ICE officers… Okeke became physically combative attempting to punch and elbow ICE officers. Our officers followed their training and used the minimum amount of force necessary to make the arrest.” – Department of Homeland Security (DHS) statement
📺 FLASHBACK: Last week, the House of Representatives narrowly passed a Senate-approved spending bill to fund most of DHS following a 76-day shutdown. President Donald J. Trump signed the bill into law on the same day. However, the bill did not include funding for ICE or Customs and Border Protection (CBP). As such, Republicans are preparing a separate funding package for ICE and CBP.

U.S. Gunships Sink Iranian Boats as Drones and Missiles Target Gulf States.

Tensions are escalating in the Gulf as U.S. forces and regional allies respond to Iranian military actions.

PULSE POINTS
❓ WHAT HAPPENED: U.S. Navy warships have been intercepting Iranian cruise missiles and drones targeting Gulf states and ships in the Strait of Hormuz, and Army Apache helicopters have destroyed six Iranian speedboats. Meanwhile, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has denied Iranian reports that the Islamic Republic struck U.S. ships with missiles.
📰 DETAIL: The U.S. Navy’s actions come as Iran has begun targeting energy infrastructure in U.S.-aligned Gulf states again, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) reporting a drone strike against the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone, the most substantial port and oil storage site in the country, on Monday. The gunship attacks on Iran’s boats follow a public warning from President Donald J. Trump in late April that he had issued orders to “shoot and kill any boat, small boats though they may be… that is putting mines in the waters of the Strait of Hormuz.”
🎯 IMPACT: The escalation in military actions has caused a spike in oil prices, with the future of a technically ongoing ceasefire between the U.S., Israel, and Iran in doubt. U.S. forces are taking action to help guide civilian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global chokepoint for oil, gas, and fertilizer supplies, but shipping remains seriously disrupted.

The Case Against James Comey Extends Beyond His ‘86-47’ Instagram Post.

The Justice Department’s case against former FBI Director James Comey is much more in-depth than a simple Instagram post, according to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.

PULSE POINTS
❓ WHAT HAPPENED: Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted by the Department of Justice (DOJ) on two felony counts connected to an Instagram post from May 2022. The post featured seashells arranged to read “86 47,” interpreted as a threat against President Donald J. Trump. However, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said on Sunday that more evidence of wrongdoing beyond the Instagram post will be revealed.
📺 DETAIL: Acting Attorney General Blanche defended Comey’s indictment over the weekend, asserting the case is supported by more than just the Instagram post. To “86” something or someone means to get rid of it in the hospitality trade, and to kill them in mob slang. The number “47” is widely understood to refer to Trump as the 47th President of the United States.
💬 KEY QUOTE: “Rest assured that it’s not just the Instagram post that leads somebody to get indicted.” – Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
🎯 IMPACT: The case against Comey comes after a third attempt on President Donald J. Trump’s life in Washington, D.C., on April 25, which the White House blames on inflammatory, violent rhetoric from Democrats and other Trump critics like Comey. This follows a previous attempt to prosecute Comey last year for lying to Congress, which was dropped by a judge on a technicality in November. The judge ruled that U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan could not prosecute the case, finding that her appointment violated U.S. law.

Trump Approval Dips as Iran Conflict, Rising Gas Prices Take Toll.

A poll released over the weekend reveals widespread disapproval of President Trump’s handling of the economy and rising prices, as Republicans brace for the November midterms.

PULSE POINTS
❓ WHAT HAPPENED: A Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll reveals that 76 percent of Americans disapprove of President  Donald J.Trump‘s handling of rising prices, while 72 percent disapprove of his approach to inflation.
📺 DETAIL: Gas prices have surged to around $4.44 per gallon, up roughly $1.50 from a year ago, intensifying concerns as fuel costs strain household budgets. Trump has argued prices will fall once the Iran war ends, defending his Middle East policy despite the economic fallout. Compared to a February poll taken before the war, his economic approval has declined, suggesting growing voter dissatisfaction. The poll also shows a divided electorate, with similar shares trusting Democrats and Republicans on economic issues, while a notable portion trusts neither party. Trump’s support among Republicans remains strong, but approval among independents has dropped significantly.
💬 KEY QUOTE: “I would do it again, but I thought the numbers would be much worse. I thought the stock market would go down much more. I thought the oil prices would go up much more. I said, ‘But we have no choice whether it does or doesn’t.’” – President Trump on his decision to strike Iran.
🎯 IMPACT: The growing disapproval of Trump’s handling of economic issues could pose significant challenges for Republicans in the midterm elections, as Democrats gain an edge in generic ballot preferences. With slim GOP majorities in both chambers of Congress, these trends could signal the loss of one or both chambers in November.
📈 DATA: Eighty-five percent of Republicans continue to support Trump, though his approval among independents has sharply declined. Gas prices have risen nearly $1.50 from last year.

THE BATTLE FOR BRITAIN – Farage Hits Campaign Trail for Critical Elections as Locals Plea: ‘Save Us, Nigel!’

NORTH WEALD, Essex – Reform UK leader Nigel Farage spent several hours at North Weald Market this morning, drumming up support at a critical moment in a bellwether county ahead of Thursday’s local elections across the United Kingdom. The reception was both warm and at times raucous, with locals flocking for selfies, and the enthusiasm was particularly noticeable among women and younger voters.

The market itself sits on a piece of land with a striking history. It sprawls across the hard-standing of North Weald Airfield, opened in 1916 by the Royal Flying Corps to defend London from German Zeppelin raids and reborn in 1927 as one of the most distinguished fighter stations in the Royal Air Force. From this very ground, 56 Squadron’s Hawker Hurricanes scrambled in 1940 to cover the Dunkirk evacuation, and within a matter of days were taking off again, alongside the American Eagle Squadrons and two Norwegian squadrons in exile, to fight the Battle of Britain. The Luftwaffe duly responded, dropping more than 200 bombs on the airfield on the afternoon of 24 August 1940 and returning to bomb it again on 3 September and once more on 29 October, with dozens of servicemen killed across those raids, although the station itself was never once put out of action. The Hawker Hurricane replica that now stands gate-guard at the entrance, kept in 56 Squadron’s livery, watches over the modern market and its roughly 300 stalls.

Some 86 years on, with the threat to Britain rather different in shape, “Save us, Nigel!” was a common refrain from voters reaching the Reform leader throughout the morning, reflecting a real sense of desperation against Sir Keir Starmer’s government, which has presided over record price rises (especially in energy bills), mass migration, and an increased terror threat across the United Kingdom.

Joining Farage on the forecourt were several of Reform’s local figures, including Cllr Annie May O’Neill and Cllr Jaymey McIvor. Reform UK Ltd merchandise was moving briskly throughout the morning, with many prospective voters leaving the market having bought party shirts (available in either blue or pink), mugs, and yard signs. The market itself was once hailed as the largest open-air market in the country, and even today it regularly attracts weekly crowds estimated to exceed 10,000, with this morning’s stalls offering everything from baked goods, hot dogs, burgers, and perfumes through to apparel, fresh meats, garden furniture, and children’s toys.

Farage was happy to spend serious amounts of time with each prospective voter who reached him. The questions covered immigration and the NHS in particular, alongside a range of other subjects that have come to dominate the public conversation in Britain over the last two years.

In between the conversations, Farage was being kept in close contact by his team on developments in the Strait of Hormuz, where Donald Trump’s “Project Freedom” maritime operation launched this morning in an attempt to break Iran’s blockade of the strait, with reports already filtering in of a drone strike on an Emirati ADNOC tanker. The contrast was instructive, with Farage moving from local matters one minute to the geopolitics of the waterway through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil passes the next, underlining his role as both a locally important campaigner for Reform and a national and international figure with a plausible claim on a future occupancy of Downing Street.

After several hours on the airfield, the Farage team decamped a few miles down the road to The Green Man at Toot Hill, where the Reform leader spent time with the pub’s owner, local celebrities, and voters from the surrounding area.

The reason Farage is putting in this kind of time in Essex is straightforward enough. The Conservatives won 52 of 75 seats on Essex County Council at the last contested election in 2021, with 48.7 per cent of the vote, an outcome that confirmed the county as a long-standing Tory stronghold and the Conservatives as its dominant party since 2001. PollCheck’s modeling for Thursday’s contest, which is being fought on redrawn boundaries that expand the chamber to 78 seats, now projects Reform UK to take 59 or 60 of those seats and the Conservatives to collapse to four. If the prediction holds even approximately, it will mark the steepest reversal of Tory fortunes the county has seen since the council was first constituted in 1889.

“Save us, Nigel,” indeed. On Thursday, in this corner of Essex at least, a great many voters are going to try to do exactly that.

Farage’s Reform Pledges Migrant Deportation Centers for Left-Voting Communities.

Nigel Farage’s Reform Party has unveiled a plan to build immigration detention centers in areas that support open borders policies, while pledging not to build centers in areas with Reform MPs or Reform-led councils.

PULSE POINTS
❓ WHAT HAPPENED: On Sunday, Nigel Farage’s Reform pledged to build immigration detention centers in areas that vote for the Green Party, the far-left party led by Zack Polanski, which supports mass immigration and open borders. Reform argues that its proposal ensures migration policy is fair and democratic.
📺 DETAIL: The plan involves constructing facilities capable of simultaneously detaining up to 24,000 migrants, nearly ten times the current capacity of immigration removal centers, within 18 months. This is part of a wider strategy to deport one million migrants over five years. Those identified for deportation will be offered financial assistance to leave voluntarily or will face detention. Reform has pledged not to build these centers in areas represented by Reform Members of Parliament (MPs) or Reform-led councils (local governments). The party argues that building the centers in places that vote for open borders, and not building them in places that vote for controlled immigration, ensures that the program remains democratic and fair. “Put simply, if you vote in a Reform council or a Reform MP, we guarantee you will not have a migrant detention center near you. However, if you vote Green, there’s a very good chance that you will. This way, everyone gets what they vote for,” said Zia Yusuf, Reform’s Home Affairs spokesman, in a social media post.
💬 KEY QUOTE: “This is the fairest approach to ensuring democratic consent for all aspects of our mass deportation program.” – Zia Yusuf, Reform UK Home Affairs Spokesman.
📺 FLASHBACK: Housing asylum seekers costs Britain around £15 million (~$20.3 million) per day. Even when their applications are rejected, asylum seekers regularly remain in the country, often for several years. Many are never deported despite having no legal standing to be in the country. Illegal immigrants are often housed at taxpayers’ expense despite having criminal records. Notably, many commit crimes while waiting for their applications to be reviewed.

GameStop Proposes Audacious $55.5 Billion eBay Bid.

GameStop has made an unsolicited $55.5 billion bid for eBay, aiming to expand its operations in the e-commerce space after the company saw skyrocketing stock growth in recent years due to its “meme stock” status.

PULSE POINTS
❓ WHAT HAPPENED: GameStop has made an unsolicited $55.5 billion offer to purchase eBay, valuing the e-commerce giant at $125 per share. The proposal includes cash and stock, with a commitment to achieve $2 billion in cost savings within a year if the deal is completed.
📺 DETAIL: GameStop’s CEO Ryan Cohen stated he is willing to take the bid directly to eBay shareholders if the board rejects the offer. Cohen also pledged to forgo traditional executive compensation, opting instead for performance-based pay. The deal would be partially financed by $20 billion in debt from TD Securities, with cost reductions primarily targeting eBay’s sales and marketing operations. GameStop argues that eBay’s spending in this area has failed to generate significant user growth. GameStop, which has been attempting to reinvent itself beyond traditional video game sales, sees the acquisition as a way to expand into a broader online retail and collectibles marketplace. However, analysts have raised concerns about how GameStop would fund such a large deal and whether it could successfully integrate eBay’s operations. The bid is described as unsolicited, meaning eBay has not agreed to the proposal and could reject it.
🎯 IMPACT: If successful, the acquisition could transform GameStop into a more prominent player in the e-commerce space while giving eBay access to GameStop’s U.S. retail network for “live commerce” initiatives. However, analysts have expressed skepticism, noting the potential burden of GameStop’s debt on eBay and questioning the strategic fit of the two companies.
📺 FLASHBACK: GameStop gained notoriety during the COVID-19 pandemic as a “meme stock,” with its valuation skyrocketing due to retail investor enthusiasm fueled by platforms like Reddit.

Mayor Giuliani ‘Critical’ in Hospital. Here’s What We Know.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a close ally of President Donald J. Trump, is hospitalized in critical but stable condition, prompting widespread concern and statements of support.

PULSE POINTS
❓ WHAT HAPPENED: Rudy Giuliani, the former Mayor of New York City and longtime ally of President Donald J. Trump, has been hospitalized and is in critical but stable condition. The announcement was made by both Trump and Giuliani’s spokesman, Ted Goodman, who wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Mayor Giuliani is a fighter who has faced every challenge in his life with unwavering strength, and he’s fighting with that same level of strength as we speak.” The cause of Giuliani’s hospitalization was undisclosed as of the time of publication.
📺 DETAIL: Giuliani, who served as New York City’s mayor from 1994 to 2001, was widely praised for his leadership during the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, becoming known as “America’s Mayor.” He has remained a prominent figure in American politics, joining President Trump’s legal team and defending him following the 2020 election, and becoming the target of civil and criminal lawfare efforts as a result. His hospitalization follows several recent health challenges, including injuries sustained in a car accident last year.
💬 KEY QUOTE: “Our fabulous Rudy Giuliani, a true warrior, and the best mayor in the history of New York City, BY FAR, has been hospitalized, and is in critical condition. What a tragedy that he was treated so badly by the Radical Left Lunatics, Democrats ALL — AND HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING! They cheated on the Elections, fabricated hundreds of stories, did anything possible to destroy our Nation, and now, look at Rudy. So sad! ” – Donald Trump
🎯 IMPACT: Giuliani’s health crisis has prompted messages of support from allies and renewed focus on his legacy as a public servant and Trump supporter.
📺 FLASHBACK: Giuliani was named Time Person of the Year in 2001 for his leadership following 9/11 and was later given an honorary knighthood by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.
