U.S. District Court Judge Ana Reyes, a Joe Biden appointee, ruled that President Donald J. Trump violated the Inspectors General Act by failing to provide Congress with a 30-day notice before firing inspectors general. Despite this violation, Reyes upheld the dismissals, citing a lack of irreparable harm to the plaintiffs.

The lawsuit was brought by eight of the 17 inspectors general dismissed by Trump earlier this year. Reyes stated in her decision, “President Trump violated the [Inspectors General Act]. That much is obvious. And Plaintiffs raise compelling arguments that the violation must be remedied through reinstatement to their positions.”

However, Reyes noted that under established case law, the plaintiffs failed to demonstrate irreparable harm. She added, “Even assuming that the IGA comports with Article II, Plaintiffs’ inability to perform their duties for 30 days is not irreparable harm. Moreover, if the IGs were reinstated, the President could lawfully remove them after 30 days by providing the required notice and rationale to Congress.”

The judge denied the request for an injunction to reinstate the inspectors general. However, Reyes has not yet ruled on whether the plaintiffs should receive back pay, requesting additional briefings on the matter.

Prevent, the United Kingdom’s counter-terrorism program, saw a sharp rise in referrals last year, marking a decade-long high, sparking concerns about extremism and radicalization.

In 2024, 9,957 people were referred to Prevent. This represents the highest number of referrals since the program’s creation in 2015. Fifty-six percent related to people with no identified ideology. Twenty percent of the referrals were related to extreme right-wing ideology, eight percent were related to Islamist extremism, eight percent to fascination with mass violence, one percent to Incel extremism, and 0.3 percent related to extreme left-wing ideology. Ethnicity data was provided in 52 percent of cases. The data revealed that 68 percent of referrals were white, 18 percent were Asian, eightpercent black, and seven percent “Other.” Prevent received an 117 percent increase in referrals between January to March 2025 following the mass stabbing in Southport, England, which was carried out by Axel Rudakubana. The Home Office has attributed the rise in referrals to “a number of operational and policy changes and improvements, along with associated training rolled out.”
🎯 IMPACT: Prevent referrals are different from terrorism charges. Somebody referred to Prevent is not necessarily guilty of carrying out a terrorist attack, planning a terrorist attack, or holding to extremist ideology. This is also underscored by the fact that more referrals relate to extreme right ideology than Islamist extremism, even though the overwhelming majority of people convicted of terror-related offenses in the United Kingdom relate to Islamist terrorism. This suggests substantial underreporting of Islamic extremism and overreporting of right-wing extremism to Prevent.

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch defended Bonehill-Paine, saying, “If we are going to stop extremism and anti-Semitism, we are going to need help from those people who were part of the problem, but have now changed and are being part of the solution.” The Conservatives leader’s decision was partially motivated by Bonehill-Paine’s claim that he received “Home Office certification” for “counter-extremism work” after leaving prison. I am very grateful for the support,” said Bonehill-Paine at the time.
