❓ WHAT HAPPENED: One of Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s closest aides called President Donald J. Trump a “fascist” and blamed him for January 6. 📺 DETAIL: Kevin Lee has served as a political aide to British Prime Minister Andy Burnham for more than 15 years. Lee worked under Burnham during the latter’s failed bids for the Labour Party leadership in 2010 and 2015, as well as serving under Burnham while he was a Shadow Cabinet member. Lee was appointed Director of the Mayor’s Office when Burnham was elected Mayor of Greater Manchester in 2017. Lee advised Burnham throughout the Makerfield by-election. Since Burnham became Prime Minister earlier this month, Lee has been appointed as Special Advisor at Number 10 North, which was created by Prime Minister Burnham as a regional office of Number 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister’s official residence in London. Lee is widely seen as the new Prime Minister’s closest and longest-serving advisor. On January 6, 2021, Lee described President Trump as a “fascist” in a post suggesting that the President had incited Jan. 6. Specifically, Lee posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Terrible scenes from the US. @realDonaldTrump proving what many of us believed, he is a fascist. For the millions of democrats (and the Democrats) in the US, we stand with you. #democracy #Biden.” The year prior, on November 6, 2020, Lee posted: “@SkyNews reporting that @realDonaldTrump is in an ‘awful mood’ – bloody good! Now he knows how he’s made the rest of us feel for the last awful 4 years of the worst Presidency ever. Goodbye Don and good riddance. #byebyeTrump.” 💬 KEY QUOTE: “Terrible scenes from the US. @realDonaldTrump proving what many of us believed, he is a fascist. For the millions of democrats (and the Democrats) in the US, we stand with you. #democracy #Biden.” — Kevin Lee, Special Advisor to Prime Minister Andy Burnham 🎯 IMPACT: This represents another example of a close advisor to the new British Prime Minister being extremely anti-Trump. Lee’s posts echo similar comments made by Matthew McGregor, the Prime Minister’s Head of Strategy at Number 10. McGregor also described President Trump as a fascist, Specifically, McGregor described the President as having “fascist tendencies.” Lee’s post attributing blame for January 6 to President Trump reflects a narrative pushed by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Britain’s public broadcaster. The BBC edited footage of a speech the President gave on January 6 to make it look like he had directly incited the breach of the United States Capitol. The scandal led to the resignations of former BBC Director-General Tim Davie and CEO of BBC News Deborah Turness. |
