U.S. Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) took Europe’s globalist elite to task for freeloading off the United States funding of NATO while speaking at the Munich Security Conference in Germany. Last week, former President Trump drew the ire of European leaders for suggesting that NATO member nations that are delinquent in their payments to the alliance should not receive protection from the United States.
Addressing globalist claims that Trump would abandon Europe, Vance pushed back, saying he didn’t find the accusation true.
“Trump is actually issuing a wake-up call to say that Europe has to take a bigger role in its own security,” Vance said, adding: “The problem with Europe is it doesn’t provide enough of a deterrence on its own… The American security blanket has allowed European security to atrophy.”
Last year, NATO member states recommitted to spending at least two percent of their respective nations’ GDP on defense. It is expected that 18 countries will reach that goal in 2024. A decade ago, when the two percent GDP target was originally set, only three NATO members made the agreed spending commitment.
Trump has been a long-standing critic of NATO and, as President, worked to ensure that member states spent the 2 percent of GDP on defense required by membership. While speaking at a campaign rally in South Carolina last week, the former President reiterated the need for European members to carry their own weight in the Cold War-era defense alliance.
