U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was left reeling by questions from GOP members on Thursday morning, with particular plaudits going to Reps. Pat Fallon (TX) and Nancy Mace (SC).
Quizzed on his infamous disappearance over the New Year period, Austin was scarcely able to give coherent answers to questions as he stuttered through pointed questions from Members of Congress. Democrats used the occasion to lobby Austin for more aid to Ukraine, but it was representations from Fallon and Mace, respectively, that cut to the heart of the issue of national security and the chain of command flagrantly ignored by Austin when he was hospitalized in December and January.
“Did you tell your staff when you received the diagnosis?” asked Mace, to which Austin responded, “I did not,” going on to admit that he neither told his staff he needed surgery, nor that he was going into hospital and would be unable to perform his duties as Secretary of Defense.”
“I have admitted that I didn’t get this right,” Austin went on, with Mace accusing him of being “AWOL” and demanding accountability for effectively leaving the world’s most fierce fighting force – the U.S. military – without leadership.
Fallon, for his part, managed to get Austin to admit that the world was safer under the presidency of Donald J. Trump.
Secretary Austin’s hospitalization, which included several days in the intensive care unit, was due to complications arising from prostate cancer surgery.
