Ron DeSantis is Using AI To Text People… Songs About Obama.

Ron DeSantis’s presidential campaign appears to be using large a language model (LLM) artificial intelligence to text potential South Carolina Republican primary votes. The initial text message appears as if it were sent by a real human: “Hi, I’m Liz working elect Ron DeSantis. Do you have a minute to answer a couple of questions?” But the bot soon fell apart and disclosed its… artificiality.

When Alan Johnson, a South Carolina based computer programmer, received the campaign text he suspected almost right away that it was an LLM and not a human on the other end. Through a series of targeted prompts, he not only got “Liz” to confirm that she was actually AI, but also convinced the artificial intelligence to write him a lovely song about former President Obama.

LLMs are a relatively new artificial intelligence technology and relatively cost prohibitive for campaigns as the estimated cost to effectively train one range anywhere from $1 million to $10 million. Ideally, a human should not be able to recognize they he or she is communicating with an LLM. However, Johnson indicates that he almost immediately suspected that he was dealing with an LLM, saying he got a ‘”..Turing Test feeling that I was talking to a bot.”

Johnson says he initially prompted “Liz” with a question as to whether she was a real human or a bot, causing her to respond with what appears to be a pre-programmed script it has been trained to uses when someone identifies it as non-human.

Next, Johnson challenged “Liz” by requesting it answer a simple math question and asking it to tell him about Open AI. LLMs will promptly respond to simple simple requests even when they are radically diverge from the conversation.

Once Johnson was confident that “Liz” was an LLM and not a human campaign volunteer, he decided to test its limits by asking it to write a song about former President Barack Obama. Which “Liz” promptly generated and delivered:

When “Liz” said she didn’t have a ‘token limit’ (a sort of word limit) the South Carolina based commuter programmer decided to test the claim by sending the LLM 30 paragraphs of ‘lorem ipsum’ – a nonsense Latin phrase that publishers use as a placeholder for actual text. Johnson’s test failed to generate a response from “Liz” indicating he had hit the LLM’s ‘token limit’ and that “Liz” was either programmed to not think it had a limit or it simply lied – a surprisingly common and disconcerting problem with LLM artificial intelligences. OpenAI, an industry leader in LLM technology, notes token limits are currently a technical limitation and that “…requests can use up to 4097 tokens shared between prompt and completion. If your prompt is 4000 tokens, your completion can be 97 tokens at most.”

Ecuador Might Elect a Dead Man President This Week.

Fernando Villavicencio, the center-right Ecuadorian presidential candidate shot dead while out campaigning on August 9th, apparently by Colombian hitmen, will still appear on election ballots on Sunday, and could win the contest.

Villavicencio was shot in the head three times during the assassination, a bloody affair that saw nine others injured and one of the politician’s assailants killed in a police shootout. It could have been substantially worse if a grenade, thrown among Villavicencio’s supporters by the assassins during the fracas, had not failed to detonate.

If the dead man, who ran on a platform of taking down drug gangs and political corruption, wins the election, his place in the presidential palace will be taken by Christian Zurita, a close friend.

Zurita expects that the South American country’s criminal underworld will attempt to kill him as well: “They killed Fernando, and I am the closest person to Fernando,” he said. “If they went for him, they are coming for me.”

The journalist has been campaigning in a bulletproof vest, and sent his family into hiding as a precaution.

“We now have a collapsed state,” he says of his county, where homicides were up by 80 percent in the first half of 2023.

U.S. Intel: Ukrainian Counter-Offensive Will Fail.

Democrats and Republicans in Washington D.C. have been shown an intelligence report warning Ukraine’s counter-offensive will likely fail, as Volodymyr Zelensky’s government grows increasingly prickly towards its Western backers, but the Biden regime continues to throw billions at the perceived problem.

Melitopol, Russia’s de facto capital in the Zaporozhye (Zaporizhzhia) oblast – one of four regions partially annexed to the Russian Federation since the invasion in February 2022 – is believed to be the main objective of the counter. Reaching it would restore Ukrainian access to the Sea of Azov, where the entire coastline is currently under Russian control, and snap the “land bridge” between the Donbass, where Russian separatists have been fighting since 2014, and the Crimea, which was annexed by Russia following the Euromaidan coup the same year.

But with Ukrainian forces having made extremely limited progress, and much of their Western equipment savaged by Russian minefields and artillery fire, the U.S. intelligence community no longer believe Melitopol is within Zelensky’s reach in 2023.

ISW Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, August 12th, 2023

Sources have denied the Biden government’s refusal to strengthen the counter-offensive with F-16 warplanes or ATACMS missile systems is responsible for the failure, saying that “[t]he problem remains piercing Russia’s main defensive line, and there’s no evidence these systems would’ve been a panacea.”

Facing further criticism from their Western sponsors for failing to make progress and, as some see it, squandering the billions of dollars in Western arms and ammunition supplied for the counter-offensive, the Ukrainian government has bridled, with Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba insisting telling Westerners who want quicker results to “go and join the foreign legion.”

“It’s easy to say that you want everything to be faster when you are not there,” he complained.

Minorities Dump Biden Over ‘Pathetic’ Economy & Ukraine First Mentality.

Minority voters, long considered some of the most loyal supporters of the Democratic Party, are expressing anger at President Joe Biden according to a new Future Track Focus Group conducted by HIT Strategies, a left-wing market research firm. The group said they were discouraged and and pessimistic about about the Biden government’s handling of the U.S. economy – with one participant calling the state of the economy “pathetic.”

One participant, who identified as an Asian American and Pacific Islander, vented his frustration with the high level of economic uncertainty and lack of clarity from the Biden White House: “They’re kind of like saying that there possibly is going to be a soft landing, but they’re also expecting a recession of some sorts. It’s kind of a mixed message.”

The state of the economy, however, wasn’t the only problem participants had with President Biden. A Hispanic respondent indicated his disagreement with the Biden regime’s financial support of Ukraine, stating: “Our economy is the lowest it’s been in god knows how long. We keep sending money to Ukraine and other countries rather than helping ourselves.”

Responses from the focus group are indicative of a concerning trend for Biden’s 2024 re-election campaign as he is likely to face-off against the previous occupant of the White House, Donald Trump – the current Republican presidential front-runner. A recent AP poll found that only 36 percent of Americans approve of the Biden economy. Overall approval for President Biden trended just slightly higher at 42 percent.

At least one participant in the focus group indicated an openness to switching his vote from Biden to Trump:

I don’t feel like Democrats really have my back or Republicans, you know? I think as a president, you only have so much power. I mean, unless you’re someone like Trump to where he just — he really didn’t care. He did what he wanted to do… Trump got in there and he changed stuff.

Several recent national polls have shown former President Trump gaining an edge over Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential contest. An August 7th Premise poll has Trump leading Biden by a 7 point margin with 41 percent of the vote to Biden’s 34 percent.

‘Leaked’ DeSantis Memo Attacks Vivek as Hindu ‘Ingrained in India’s Caste System’

Ron DeSantis’s controversial super PAC ‘Never Back Down’ leaked its own memorandum suggesting the Florida Governor attack presidential rival Vivek Ramaswamy’s historic support for inheritance tax by bringing up his Indian heritage and Hindu faith.

“Ramaswamy – a Hindu who grew up visiting relatives in India and was very much ingrained in India’s caste system – supports [inheritance tax] as a mechanism to preserve a meritocracy in America and ensure everyone starts on a level playing field,” the memo reads, encouraging DeSantis to “sledgehammer” the tech entrepreneur during a debate to create a media “moment”.

The memo recommends DeSantis attempt to imitate Donald Trump by coming up with a derisive nickname for Ramaswamy, suggesting “Vivek the Fake” or “Fake Vivek”.

The DeSantis camp’s concerns over Ramaswamy reflect the fact that, having failed to make any real progress in peeling off MAGA conservatives from the former president, the Floridian now faces being driven into third place in the Republican primary race, with polls already putting Ramaswamy ahead of him on multiple occasions.

Ramaswamy’s team appears to have taken the high road on the attack memo, with a spokeswoman saying the businessman has “traveled this country and is very grateful for the warm support he has received from Christian voters across the country… The one-off attacks on his faith do not represent the views of most Christians who respect Vivek’s forthrightness and honesty about his own faith,” she added.

Woman Jailed for 22 Years After Mailing Ricin to Trump.

Pascale Ferrier, a dual citizen of Canada and France, has been imprisoned for almost 22 years for mailing homemade ricin to President Donald Trump and eight Texas law officers.

Ferrier, 56, was caught by the U.S. authorities in September of 2020 after crossing the Canadian border into Buffalo, New York, armed with a firearm, a knife, and a store of ammunition.

In the ricin-tainted package she mailed to the former president, she had included a letter branding him an “ugly tyrant” and rambling: “If it doesn’t work, I’ll find better recipe for another poison, or I might use my gun when I’ll be able to come. Enjoy!”

Ricin has no known antidote, and has been used in a number of notable assassinations, with the 1978 killing of Bulgarian journalist Georgi Markov in London, England probably the most infamous. Markov was killed by a ricin pellet injected into his leg with the tip of an umbrella while he was waiting at a bus stop, likely by an agent of his native Bulgaria – then one of the Soviet Union’s communist puppet states.

Ferrier made the poison at her home in the French-speaking Canadian province of Quebec.

chris christie

Everybody Hates Chris (Christie).

Everybody hates Chris Christie. Well, almost everybody, according to a new poll that shows the presidential candidate has almost no constituency anywhere in the nation.

Just 24 percent of Republicans surveyed have a favorable opinion of him compared to 57 percent who view him unfavorably. Among Democrats, Christie gleans 22 percent favorability and 60 percent view him unfavorably. The margin amongst independent voters was 17 percent to 46 percent.

Christie’s favorability amongst urban, suburban, and rural voters all trended in the low 20s, while his unfavorable rating ranged from 54 to 60 percent. Among key racial demographics things did not improve, with former Governor Christie with White voters saying they saw Christie as favorable 24 percent to 57 percent unfavorable, Black voters rated him 19 percent favorable to 48 percent unfavorable, and Hispanic voters came in at 16 percent favorable to 55 percent unfavorable.

Yet, the former New Jersey Governor has begun to eat Ron DeSantis’s lunch in New Hampshire, with no signs of the feast abating.

Pro-Russia

Ukraine Media Admits 50% of Civilians on North-East Front Are Pro-Russia.

The Ukrainian media has admitted that many civilians near the north-eastern front, where a 100,000-strong Russian force is currently advancing, are sympathetic to Russia.

“Subjectively speaking, there are many separatists here,” conceded Yevhen Didkovskyi, a military officer with responsibility for community relations in the north-eastern city of Kupyansk (Kupiansk), in the Kharkov (Kharkiv) region.

Didkovskyi told the Kyiv Independent that the percentage of the local population who are pro-Russia at 50 percent, while police estimated a more modest 15 to 20 percent. Didkovskyi also accused the police of obstructing the military at times, however, while one police officer said some 85 percent of his colleagues co-operated with the Russians when they controlled Kupyansk earlier in the war.

Didkovskyi was even more critical of community leaders than the police: “I come to a village, go into the head’s office and go: ‘Look, I got 30 cold, wet, angry men with guns, can you just find me three empty houses for them to stay?’ He stands there for two hours like: I don’t know,” he complained, seemingly not appreciating how intimidating such a request could seem.

Many Ukrainian citizens, particularly in east, are ethnic Russians, and many more, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, speak Russian rather then Ukrainian as their first language.

BREAKING: US to Send F-16s to Ukraine

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has sent letters to Denmark and Norway assuring that the Biden government would expedite approvals for all transfers of F-16s to Ukraine. In the letters Blinken said that the F-16s would transfered once Ukrainian pilots have completed the Danish and Norwegian lead training program:

I am writing to express the United States’ full support for both the transfer of F-16 fighter aircraft to Ukraine and for the training of Ukrainian pilots by qualified F-16 instructors…. It remains critical that Ukraine is able to defend itself against ongoing Russian aggression and violation of its sovereignty.

The letters from Secretary Blinken mark the first time the Biden regime has given a hard commitment to supplying the Ukrainian military with F-16s. This past May, President Joe Biden endorsed the Danish and Norwegian training program but stopped short of setting a timetable for transfers of the advanced American fighter jet.

Recent reports have indicated that the Ukrainian military is becoming overly reliant on captured and retrofitted Russian vehicles and that the stalled counter-offensive has lead to low moral among Ukrainian soldiers. During a panel debate in Arendal, Norway this past week, NATO Chief of Staff Stian Jenssen suggested that Ukraine may have to surrender some of its territory to Russia in order to obtain a peace settlement: “I’m not saying it has to be like this. But that could be a possible solution.”
