Newsmax CEO Hits Out at ‘Not Fully Informed’ Trump, Blasts ‘Censorship of Jimmy Kimmel.’

PULSE POINTS

WHAT HAPPENED: Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy criticized the FCC’s handling of a controversy involving Jimmy Kimmel at a Senate hearing.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: Chris Ruddy, President Trump, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, and Jimmy Kimmel.

📍WHEN & WHERE: The incident occurred on Capitol Hill during a ‘Media Ownership’ hearing on Friday.

💬KEY QUOTE: “I don’t believe in the censorship of Jimmy Kimmel.” – Chris Ruddy

🎯IMPACT: The comments highlighted tensions over media regulation and potential impacts on media mergers.

IN FULL

Newsmax chief Chris Ruddy used a rare appearance on Capitol Hill on Friday to lash out at President Trump’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC), telling Senators at the ‘Media Ownership’ hearing: “I don’t believe in the censorship of Jimmy Kimmel.”

The intervention came after Trump-aligned FCC chairman Brendan Carr found himself in a spat with the late-night comedy host over the false claim that conservative leader Charlie Kirk was murdered by a Trump supporter.

“Look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Carr said at the time, leading to Kimmel’s firing. “These companies can find ways to change conduct, to take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or, you know, there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”

Kimmel was reinstated after industry-wide condemnation of his suspension, which apparently triggered the Newsmax CEO, too.

Ruddy, who was appearing as part of a debate on the existing broadcast cap and its impact on media mergers, lashed out further at President Trump and Chairman Carr, claiming Trump was not “fully informed” on the subject.

“I think the president makes a lot of good decisions, and he does when he’s fully informed. I think Chairman Carr has not informed him and advised him well on this issue,” Ruddy said towards the end of the two-hour hearing reviewed in full by The National Pulse.

Most of the conversation revolved around the Nexstar-Tegna merger and local news production and investment across the United States, with Ruddy claiming that his Newsmax would suffer due to larger broadcasters acquiring local news channels nationwide, even though Newsmax does not compete in local media markets.

The meeting was convened by Senator Ted Cruz, a major beneficiary of Chris Ruddy’s political donations.

Recently asked about his spat with Kimmel, Chairman Carr joked: “Well, you can’t see it because I have a collar and a tie on, but underneath I have a ‘No Regrets’ tattoo right across the bottom of my neck… And that’s sort of the motto that I tend to live by.”

Far-Left UK Govt DENIES Pausing Strategic Islands Giveaway After Trump Intervention.

PULSE POINTS

WHAT HAPPENED: The British government has denied reports that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has paused his deal to give away the British Indian Ocean Territory (Chagos Islands), which includes the British-American Diego Garcia base, after President Donald J. Trump criticized the agreement.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: Donald Trump, Keir Starmer, British Foreign Office (State Department) Minister Hamish Falconer, Reform Party leader Nigel Farage, and former British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace.

📍WHEN & WHERE: A debate over Chagos unfolded in the British Parliament on Wednesday, following Trump’s remarks on Truth Social and Nigel Farage’s recent visit to the Indian Ocean region.

💬KEY QUOTE: “We are pausing for discussions with our American counterparts,” Falconer previously said.

🎯IMPACT: The dispute raises questions over the future of British sovereignty in the Chagos Islands, the viability of Diego Garcia, and British-American relations.

IN FULL

The British government has rejected claims that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, leader of Britain’s far-left Labour Party, has put on hold an agreement to transfer control of the British Indian Ocean Territory (Chagos Islands) to China-allied Mauritius after President Donald J. Trump publicly opposed the deal. British Foreign Office (State Department) minister Hamish Falconer had previously told Members of Parliament (MPs) that the government was “pausing for discussions with our American counterparts.”

The Foreign Office now claims that Falconer “misspoke,” and there is no pause in the process. The bizarre deal would see Britain hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, in obedience to a non-binding and unenforceable advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and then pay to lease back Diego Garcia—the largest island in the chain, which hosts a strategic British-American military base—for 99 years. Trump has repeatedly called the deal a “big mistake,” as Mauritius could renege on the deal once sovereignty is established, or undermine Diego Garcia by leasing another of the Chagos Islands to an adversary state such as China.

Nigel Farage, the leader of the Reform Party, recently traveled to the Indian Ocean area, hoping to reach one of the outlying Chagos Islands to support a new, ad hoc settlement by the Chagossians—exiled from the islands to make way for the military base decades ago—who are overwhelmingly opposed to Mauritius taking over. Notably, Mauritius is over a thousand miles from the Chagos archipelago, with no historic population or claim to the islands beyond the fact that they were administered from Mauritius for administrative convenience when they were both part of the British Empire.

War Sec Hegseth Appeals Injunction Protecting Sen. Kelly in ‘Seditious’ Video Case.

PULSE POINTS

WHAT HAPPENED: Secretary of War Pete Hegseth is appealing a court decision that blocked the punishment of Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) over a video urging military members to ignore “illegal” orders.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: Secretary Hegseth, Sen. Kelly, and five other congressional Democrats, including Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) and Reps. Jason Crow (D-CO), Maggie Goodlander (D-NH), Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), and Chris Deluzio (D-PA).

📍WHEN & WHERE: The appeal was filed on Tuesday with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

💬KEY QUOTE: “There is only one reason to appeal that ruling: to keep trampling on the free speech rights of retired veterans and silence dissent.” – Mark Kelly

🎯IMPACT: The case raises questions about the scope of federal courts regarding the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), and the legal limits of military order compliance.

IN FULL

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth is challenging a district court ruling that blocked his efforts to demote Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ), a former Navy captain, over a video in which Kelly and other Democrats urged military members to disobey what they vaguely characterized as “illegal” orders. The appeal was filed on Tuesday with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

Kelly and five other congressional Democrats—Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), Reps. Jason Crow (D-CO), Maggie Goodlander (D-NH), Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), and Chris Deluzio (D-PA)—appeared in the controversial video. The lawmakers, all veterans or former Intelligence Community members, claimed that service members are not required to follow unlawful orders.

President Donald J. Trump and Secretary Hegseth labeled the video “sedition.” In response to Hegseth’s appeal, Kelly stated on X (formerly Twitter), “These guys don’t know when to quit. A federal judge told Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth that they violated my constitutional rights and chilled the free speech of millions of retired veterans. There is only one reason to appeal that ruling: to keep trampling on the free speech rights of retired veterans and silence dissent.”

The National Pulse reported earlier this month that U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon, a Bush appointee, granted Kelly a preliminary injunction against Hegseth. Leon claimed that the Department of War had “trampled on Senator Kelly’s First Amendment freedoms and threatened the constitutional liberties of millions of military retirees.”

Bill Gates Insists He ‘Did Nothing, Saw Nothing’ Amid Epstein Files Scandal.

PULSE POINTS

WHAT HAPPENED: Bill Gates addressed his connections to deceased pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein and admitted to two affairs during a town hall meeting with staff from his foundation.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: Bill Gates, Jeffrey Epstein, Melinda French Gates, and the staff of the Gates Foundation.

📍WHEN & WHERE: During a scheduled Gates Foundation town hall meeting, following the release of the Epstein Files in January.

💬KEY QUOTE: “I did nothing illicit. I saw nothing illicit.” – Bill Gates

🎯IMPACT: The remarks renewed scrutiny over Gates’s ties to Epstein and his personal conduct, as well as broader concerns regarding his foundation’s operations.

IN FULL

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and head of the Gates Foundation, addressed his connections to deceased pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein and admitted to two extramarital affairs during a town hall meeting with his foundation’s staff. The meeting followed the release of files by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in January, which renewed scrutiny of Gates’s ties to Epstein. Messages written by Epstein allege that Gates contracted a sexually transmitted disease (STD) from “Russian girls” and subsequently sought assistance in acquiring antibiotics that he intended to secretly administer to his then-wife, to treat or protect her from the STD without her noticing

The billionaire admitted it was a “huge mistake to spend time with Epstein,” but maintained, “I did nothing illicit. I saw nothing illicit.” He also noted that he met Epstein in 2011, years after Epstein’s conviction for soliciting a minor for prostitution, and continued meeting him until 2014. Gates claimed he was unaware of Epstein’s full background at the time. This defense has struck some as less than genuine, as Epstein’s 2008 conviction was a matter of public record. In addition, the likelihood that Gates’s personal staff did not vet Epstein at all seems low.

Gates also claimed that Epstein attempted to use knowledge of his affairs with two Russian women to leverage influence and favors. Gates stated that the images of him with women in the Epstein files were taken at Epstein’s request and included Epstein’s assistants. “I apologize to other people who are drawn into this because of the mistake that I made,” Gates told staff.

Notably, the Gates Foundation clarified in a statement that the town hall meeting was part of a regularly scheduled event where Gates answered questions submitted by employees. The foundation reiterated that no financial collaborations or payments were ever made to Epstein, and no foundation funds were tied to him. “Ultimately, the foundation did not pursue any collaboration with Epstein, and no fund was ever created,” the organization claims.

Melinda French Gates, Gates’s ex-wife, has previously expressed concerns about his association with Epstein. Bill and Melinda Gates divorced in 2021 after 27 years of marriage.

Newsom Gifts Additional $35 Million to Illegal Immigrants.

PULSE POINTS

WHAT HAPPENED: California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) announced an additional $35 million in humanitarian funding to support illegal immigrants amid increased federal immigration deportation efforts under President Donald J. Trump.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: Gov. Newsom, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials.

📍WHEN & WHERE: California, February 2026.

💬KEY QUOTE: “While the federal government targets hardworking families, California stands with them—uniting partners and funding local communities to help support their neighbors.” – Gavin Newsom

🎯IMPACT: The funding will provide legal aid and other resources to illegal immigrants, prioritizing non-citizens over American taxpayers.

IN FULL

Democrat California Governor Gavin Newsom‘s administration has announced the allocation of $35 million in humanitarian funding to assist illegal immigrants facing deportation amid heightened immigration enforcement under the Trump administration. This supplements the $125 million previously committed to immigration-related legal services.

In a statement, Newsom said, “While the federal government targets hardworking families, California stands with them—uniting partners and funding local communities to help support their neighbors.” The funds will support nonprofit groups in delivering legal aid, food assistance, and other essential support to migrants.

Assemblymember Carl DeMaio (R) noted that the spending favors illegal immigrants over U.S. citizens, remarking, “If you were audited by the IRS and found to owe money and back taxes, as a citizen, you couldn’t say, ‘Well, I want a free lawyer to fight the federal government.’”

On the federal side, the Trump administration’s immigration policies have resulted in more than 675,000 deportations since January 2025, along with an estimated 2.2 million self-deportations, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has emphasized the positive impacts of the deportations, stating, “Countless lives have been saved, communities have been strengthened, and the American people have been put first again.”

Tensions persist over California’s sanctuary policies, with ICE issuing detainers for over 33,000 individuals in state custody. Outgoing DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin criticized the approach, stating, “Governor Newsom and his fellow California sanctuary politicians are releasing murderers, pedophiles, and drug traffickers back into our neighborhoods and putting American lives at risk.”

IN FULL

President Donald J. Trump delivered a nearly two-hour State of the Union address, calling it the beginning of a new “Golden Age of America” and laying out an agenda centered on tariffs, border enforcement, election integrity, military strength, and cultural renewal.

“The State of our Union is strong,” Trump declared early in the speech.

Opening with America’s 250th anniversary, he told lawmakers, “You’ve seen nothing yet. We’re going to do better and better and better. This is the Golden Age of America.” Later, he added, “We are the hottest country anywhere in the world.”

Tariffs, Taxes, and the Economy.

Trump again proposed replacing the federal income tax with tariff revenue, saying it would lift a “great financial burden” off Americans. He argued foreign countries had been paying “hundreds of billions” under his trade policies before a recent Supreme Court ruling he called “unfortunate,” drawing applause from Democrats.

He promoted “Trump Accounts,” tax deductions for auto loans on American-made cars, and his “Great Healthcare Plan,” which he said would return money to individuals rather than insurance companies. He touted his TrumpRX prescription drug pricing platform and said technology companies would be required to build their own power plants to support data centers, lowering electricity costs for consumers.

Trump pledged to “always protect” Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, and claimed typical 401(k) balances have risen by $30,000.

He also announced a “war on fraud” led by Vice President J.D. Vance, alleging that billions were siphoned from taxpayer programs in states including Minnesota, California, Massachusetts, and Maine. Rep. Ilhan Omar appeared visibly frustrated as he detailed the initiative. Trump also promoted his Insider Trading Act to bar members of Congress from profiting off their positions.

Border Security and Election Integrity.

Trump declared that “ZERO illegal aliens have been admitted to the United States” in the past nine months, while emphasizing support for legal immigration.

In one of the night’s most dramatic moments, he challenged members of Congress to stand if they believed their first duty was to protect U.S. citizens rather than illegal aliens. Most Democrats remained seated as Republicans delivered a sustained ovation.

He urged passage of the “Delilah Law” to block states from granting commercial driver’s licenses to illegal aliens and promoted the SAVE America Act, declaring, “All voters must show voter ID.”

“You should be ashamed of yourselves!” Trump shouted at Democrats as members, including Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, yelled from their seats. Earlier, Rep. Al Green held up a protest sign referencing a recent social media controversy and later left the chamber while Republicans chanted “USA!”

Trump also highlighted Sage Blair, who he said was “transitioned” at age 14 in Virginia without parental knowledge. When Democrats did not stand in recognition, he pointed toward them and said, “These people are crazy, I’m telling you.”

Faith and Political Violence.

The President spoke of a renewal in Christianity and faith in God, especially among young Americans. He introduced Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk’s widow, as his personal guest. Chants of “Charlie!” broke out in the chamber.

“We must totally reject political violence of any kind,” Trump said.

Energy and Foreign Policy.

Trump said the United States has received more than 80 million barrels of oil from “our new friend and partner, Venezuela.” He referenced the removal of Nicolas Maduro and introduced Enrique Gonzales, a former political prisoner of the Venezuelan regime.

He praised his foreign policy team, including Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and spoke about the retrieval of hostages from Hamas. He highlighted National Guard deployments in several U.S. cities.

Turning to Iran, Trump said the regime has “killed and maimed” hundreds of thousands and called them “the kings of the roadside bombs,” while referencing protesters killed during recent uprisings.

“We have the most powerful military on Earth,” Trump said, citing the Department of Defense’s trillion-dollar budget. “It’s called peace through strength, and it’s been very, very effective.”

Honoring American Heroes.

The speech included several honors that drew bipartisan standing ovations.

Trump awarded helicopter pilot Eric Slover the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery during a mission in Venezuela despite being wounded. He introduced Royce Williams, 100, who fought seven Soviet MiG fighter jets in a half-hour dogfight over Korea in 1952, shooting down four of them. Trump called him “a legend long before this evening,” and First Lady Melania Trump presented him with the Congressional Medal of Honor. The chamber stood for more than a minute.

“It’s an honor to be in the same room with you,” Trump told Williams.

Earlier in the evening, Trump honored a nearly 100-year-old World War II veteran, George “Buddy” Taggart, awarded Petty Officer Scott Ruskin the Legion of Merit for rescuing 164 people during Texas floods, introduced the men’s Olympic gold-winning hockey team to chants of “USA!” and announced that goaltender Connor Hellebuyck will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He said the U.S. women’s Olympic team will also visit the White House.

Closing Message.

As the speech approached the two-hour mark, Trump spoke about America’s history and what he called its God given blessings.

“The revolution that began in 1776 has not ended. It still continues because the flame of liberty and independence still burns in the heart of every American patriot,” he said.

Trump concluded simply, “God bless the United States of America.”

The Democratic response is expected to be delivered by Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger following the President’s address.

Erika Kirk will attend the State of the Union address on Tuesday evening as a special guest of President Donald J. Trump. According to the White House, the President will use the occasion to highlight the spiritual revival that has taken place in the United States since the assassination of her late husband, Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), in September 2025.

President Trump will emphasize the “tremendous revival of faith, Christianity, and belief in God in our country” since the tragedy, says a White House official. The President will also reaffirm that America is “one nation under God” and urge Congress to “firmly reject political violence against our fellow citizens.”

Erika Kirk has since taken over the leadership of TPUSA, fulfilling her late husband’s wishes. She has called on Americans to draw closer to Jesus Christ and live by the values her husband championed.

The accused gunman, Tyler Robinson, has been charged with the murder. Robinson lived with his “transgender partner,” Lance Twiggs, who was undergoing a transition in an attempt to appear female. The National Pulse reported earlier on Tuesday that Utah Judge Tony Graf denied a motion by Robinson’s defense attorneys to disqualify the Utah County Attorney’s Office from prosecuting the case. The defense argued that a conflict of interest existed because the daughter of one of the attorneys in the prosecutor’s office was present at the Utah college campus where the assassination occurred.

Other guests of President Trump will include the parents of Sarah Beckstrom, the West Virginia National Guard member who was killed by Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal in a terrorist ambush attack in Washington, D.C., last November.

Representative Tony Gonzales (R-TX) declared on Tuesday that he will not resign amid allegations of an affair with his former aide, Regina Aviles, who died by suicide in September 2025. Gonzales, who is married with six children, has faced mounting pressure from fellow Republican lawmakers to step down, following the release of explicit text messages allegedly exchanged between him and Aviles.

“I will not resign. I work every day for the people of Texas. And there will be an opportunity for all the details and facts that come out. What you’ve seen is not all the facts,” Gonzales said on Capitol Hill after being turned away by staff in House Speaker Mike Johnson‘s (R-LA) office.

The alleged affair reportedly began in 2024, with text messages showing Gonzales pressuring Aviles for explicit photos and making sexual comments. In one exchange, Gonzales asked Aviles for a “sexy pic” and later inquired about her favorite sexual positions. Aviles, who had been his regional district director in Uvalde since 2021, reportedly confided in a friend about the affair, sharing text messages and expressing concern that her husband would discover the relationship.

Subsequently, Aviles’s husband reportedly discovered the affair in July 2025, leading to their separation and her subsequent depression. Aviles took her own life in September 2025 after dousing herself with gasoline and setting herself on fire. Her death was ruled a suicide, with an autopsy revealing she was intoxicated at the time.

Meanwhile, Gonzales has denied the allegations, calling earlier reports “untruthful,” but has not directly addressed the newly surfaced text messages—fellow GOP lawmakers, including Reps. Chip Roy (R-TX), Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), and Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) have publicly called for Gonzales to step down. The revelations have cast a shadow over Gonzales’s re-election campaign, as he faces a primary challenge from Second Amendment activist and firearm manufacturer Brandon Herrera. Early voting for the Republican primary in Texas began on February 17, with the primary election set for March 3.

Trump Planning Executive Order to Make Banks Collect Citizenship Data: Report.

PULSE POINTS

WHAT HAPPENED: The Trump administration is considering an Executive Order requiring banks to gather citizenship information from customers.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: The Trump administration, U.S. banks, and Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

📍WHEN & WHERE: Discussions are believed to be ongoing as of February 2026.

🎯IMPACT: The order would allow the Trump administration to open a new front in the financial sector as part of its ongoing efforts to deport millions of illegal immigrants unlawfully residing in the U.S.

IN FULL

President Donald J. Trump is considering a new Executive Order mandating that banks operating in the United States require citizenship documentation from customers. The order would allow the Trump administration to open a new front in the financial sector as part of its ongoing efforts to deport millions of illegal immigrants unlawfully residing in the U.S.

If enacted, banks would need to request additional documentation, such as passports, from both new and existing account holders. Currently, federal financial regulators do not require banks to specifically require citizenship information from customers banking in the U.S.

Under existing “know your customer” regulations, banks are already required to collect certain information to prevent money laundering and other crimes. However, these regulations do not typically involve sharing citizenship data with the government. At least one Trump White House official, speaking with The Wall Street Journal, emphasized that while discussions are taking place within the Treasury Department, no final decision has been made.

“Any reporting about potential policymaking that has not been officially announced by the White House is baseless speculation,” White House spokesman Kush Desai said regarding the possible presidential directive.

Should President Trump issue an Executive Order on the matter, the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) would likely play a key role in implementing and overseeing the policy. Already, FinCEN administers federal laws related to anti-money laundering and counterterrorism financing. The National Pulse previously reported that the Trump administration directed FinCEN to begin a geographic targeting operation for the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, applying extra scrutiny to all businesses engaging in overseas money transfers, in the aftermath of allegations that the state’s Somali immigrant community engaged in billions of dollars of social services fraud.

Hegseth Reveals Pentagon Working on Release of UFO Files.

PULSE POINTS

WHAT HAPPENED: Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced that the Department of War will fully comply with President Donald J. Trump’s executive order to release all government files on UFOs and extraterrestrial life.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, President Trump, and Representatives Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) and Eric Burlison (R-MO).

📍WHEN & WHERE: Monday, February 23, 2026, during the Department of War’s ‘Arsenal of Freedom’ tour event in Denver, Colorado.

💬KEY QUOTE: “We’re digging in. We’re going to be in full compliance with that executive order, eager to provide that for the President.” – Sec. Pete Hegseth

🎯IMPACT: The release of UFO-related files could provide unprecedented transparency and potentially reveal new truths about extraterrestrial phenomena.

IN FULL

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has confirmed that the Department of War will comply with President Donald J. Trump’s Executive Order to release all government files related to UFOs and extraterrestrial life. Speaking at an ‘Arsenal of Freedom’ tour event in Denver, Colorado, on Monday, Sec. Hegseth stated, “We’re digging in. We’re going to be in full compliance with that executive order, eager to provide that for the President.”

Hegseth, who acknowledged the unprecedented nature of his role in this matter, said, “I did not have that on my bingo card at all.” He further explained that while the timeline for releasing the files remains unclear, the Department of War and other agencies are actively working to fulfill the directive. When pressed on whether he has knowledge of the existence of extraterrestrial life, Hegseth stated, “We’ll see. I get to do the review and find out along with all of you.”

Meanwhile, Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), chair of the House Oversight Committee’s Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) task force, revealed that the declassified documents will be made available on the National Archives’ website. Meanwhile, Representative Eric Burlison (R-MO), who has been granted access to visit Area 51 and other alleged UFO-related sites, indicated that the Trump Administration is fully supporting the investigation into UAPs.

The National Pulse reported last week that President Trump’s order followed former President Barack Obama‘s controversial remarks suggesting government knowledge of extraterrestrial life during a podcast interview. In response, Trump criticized Obama, alleging that he had disclosed classified information. Trump stated, “I don’t know if they’re real or not. I can tell you he gave classified information. He made a big mistake.”

GOP Governor Breaks With Trump on Deportations, Defends Cheap Haitian Labor.

PULSE POINTS

WHAT HAPPENED: Ohio Governor Mike DeWine (R) is criticizing President Donald J. Trump’s decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians, while defending his state government’s support for importing cheap immigrant labor.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: Gov. DeWine, President Trump, Haitian migrants, and Springfield employers.

📍WHEN & WHERE: Sunday, February 22, 2026, during an appearance on CBS’s Face the Nation.

💬KEY QUOTE: “Springfield is an industrial city, manufacturing city that was down. It has been coming back. And frankly, one of the reasons it’s coming back is because of the Haitians who are working there.” – Governor Mike DeWine

🎯IMPACT: The influx of Haitian labor has driven down wages, increased housing costs, and placed strain on welfare systems in Springfield, Ohio.

IN FULL

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine (R) appeared on CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday to defend the importation of cheap immigrant labor and criticize President Donald J. Trump’s decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians. DeWine argued that Haitians have played a key role in supposedly revitalizing Springfield, Ohio, by working manufacturing jobs that he claimed could not be filled otherwise.

“Springfield is an industrial city, manufacturing city that was down. It has been coming back. And frankly, one of the reasons it’s coming back is because of the Haitians who are working there,” DeWine said, adding, “These are people who, if you talk to the employers, they were filling jobs that were not being able to be filled in any other way.”

The Republican governor went on to criticize President Trump for ending TPS for Haitians last summer. “So, if one day that TPS is taken away, no employer can hire them anymore, and you’ll have all these people who are unemployed. So, I think the policy there is wrong,” DeWine stated.

However, census data paints a less optimistic picture of Springfield’s economic situation after the influx of Haitian immigrants. The town’s poverty rate stands at 23.06 percent, with a median household income of $47,143—both figures significantly worse than Ohio’s state averages. Housing costs have also risen sharply since 2020, with home values increasing by more than 50 percent and rents rising due to limited inventory.

Notably, the TPS designation has allowed up to 15,000 Haitians in Springfield to access welfare programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), adding to the tax burden for residents. Additionally, the Springfield school district has enrolled approximately 1,500 Haitian children, requiring the hiring of teachers fluent in Haitian Creole. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services noted that over 5,200 aid applications for Haitians were approved last year.

The National Pulse reported earlier this month that U.S. District Court Judge Ana Reyes, appointed by former President Joe Biden, issued a ruling temporarily halting the Trump administration’s effort to end the TPS designation for approximately 350,000 Haitian nationals. Judge Reyes, a Harvard-educated Uruguayan immigrant, admitted that the TPS statute limits judicial review of the substantive decisions on country designations, but argued she could intervene regardless to examine whether the administrative process followed proper procedures.
