French President Emmanuel Macron has called France’s two-term presidential term limit ‘damnable bullshit,’ causing a number of political opponents to suggest he is drifting towards authoritarian rule.
Leader of the radical socialist ‘Left Party’ Jean-Luc Mélenchon said Macron made the remarks while conducting negotiations with a number of political opposition leaders in a desperate attempt to break the gridlock in the French parliament.
He was responding to the populist Jordan Bardella’s suggestion of a single term limit of seven years, to which the French President said it was “damnable bullshit that one could not be reelected.” The comments were later confirmed by two participants.
The French President spent 12 hours discussing an array of topics such as the war in Ukraine, the nation’s rising inflation and purchasing powers, and institutional reform.
Macron will be forced to forfeit the French presidency in 2027, since he was only re-elected last year, beating the right-wing populist leader, Marine Le Pen. His current disapproval rating is 65 percent, with less than two-thirds approving of his premiership.
