The first patient fitted with the Neuralink brain implant has achieved the milestone of navigating a computer mouse with mere thought, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced at an X (formerly Twitter) Spaces event on Monday.
The patient, part of the neurotech startup’s inaugural human testing group, had the implant inserted last month and has shown good progress, according to Musk. Musk further assured that the patient has experienced “no ill effects.” The patient has demonstrated the ability to move a mouse up and down and drag screen boxes simply through thought.
The brain implant, dubbed “Telepathy,” consists of an electrode with over 1,000 flexible conductors integrated into the human cerebral cortex via a surgical robot. Musk previously stated that the device “enables control of your phone or computer and through them almost any device, just by thinking.”
The groundbreaking technology is designed to process thoughts related to movement, a function that so far appears to be working.
Neuralink conducted its first human test trial with an individual who had lost usage of his limbs. The trial was green-lit by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May 2023.
