A U.S. Secret Service (USSS) agent accidentally discharged his firearm on duty in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, resulting in non-life-threatening injuries. The agent was subsequently taken to a hospital, where his condition was assessed as stable.
The agency describes the event as a “negligent discharge” but has not provided further context or details about how the incident occurred. The Secret Service Office of Professional Responsibility has announced an investigation.
The incident occurs as the USSS is grappling with accusations of gross incompetence throughout the 2024 election cycle. There have been two failed assassination attempts against former President Donald J. Trump, one of which saw a gunman open fire on the former president, hitting his ear and killing a bystander.
This first assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, led to the resignation of USSS Director Kimberly Cheatle. The second attempt took place at Trump’s golf course in Florida last week and saw a Ukraine-linked Democrat donor camp out in bushes for over 12 hours, coming within rifle range of the former president before he was detected.
