British health experts are scrambling to reduce the spread of a new swine flu variant known as “H1N2” after the country recorded its first human case on Tuesday. The virus, which is similar to that currently spreading among pigs, was first located by a doctor in North Yorkshire, with the patient experiencing “mild symptoms,” according to reports.
The UK’s Health Security (UKHSA) said it is tracing the spread of the virus and has contacted those close to the infected individual, offering them tests to identify the extent of transmission. The contagiousness of the variant is yet unknown.
Incident Director at UKHSA, Meera Chand, announced following the transmission, “This is the first time we have detected this virus in humans in the UK, though it is very similar to viruses that have been detected in pigs.”
“In accordance with established protocols, investigations are underway to learn how the individual acquired the infection and to assess whether there are any further associated cases,” she added.
The agency also stated, “Pig keepers must also report any suspicion of swine flu in their herds to their local vet immediately.”
