Is the Fed Off-Limits?

February 7, 2015
Analysis

The liberal economic elite is circling the wagons to preserve the Federal Reserve.  Alan Blinder denounces proposed laws which will “encourage congressional meddling with monetary policy.”  Catherine Rampell takes up the cudgel against legislation mandating an audit of the Fed, on the grounds that “monetary policy is a complex technical apparatus that not everyone (read Congress) is equipped to operate.” What is raising the liberal establishment’s ire? Three modest bills authored by Representatives Scott Garrett and Thomas Massie, and Senator Rand Paul, which seek to remind the Federal Reserve for whom they work. The Federal Reserve is as close to

The New Problem with Governors’ Girlfriends

February 7, 2015
Analysis

New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo isn’t the only governor with a girlfriend problem. Oregon’s Democratic Governor John Kitzhaber is in hot water for the fact that his girlfriend cum fiancée cum “first lady” has been using their personal relationship to make money, as Washington Post’s Wonkblog noted. The liberal Oregonian is calling on him to resign. Not, of course, for the bad example to the children which we now take for granted but at least for the affront to good government and taxpayers, bless ‘em: “To recite every reported instance in which Hayes, ostensibly under Kitzhaber’s watchful eye, has used

Taking on the Real Marriage Inequality

February 7, 2015
Analysis

The Democrats like to talk about every kind of inequality, except the most devastating: marriage inequality. No I am not talking about the fact that non-marital unions aren’t treated as marriages (whether it is same-sex unions, or the latest progressive complaint over “singlism”). The most important marriage inequality in America is that 42 percent of children are growing up apart from their own mom and dad joined by marriage, according to the Census data (Current Population Survey) analyzed by respected family scholar Nicholas Zill. Of course the half-full good news in that is marriage is showing persistent and surprising strength: overall almost 6 in

On Common Core, Bobby Jindal Leads

February 6, 2015
Analysis

The following is adapted from APP Chairman Sean Fieler’s introduction of Gov. Bobby Jindal at the American Principles Project gala on Feb. 5 in Washington D.C. To the parents from all over the country, from Maryland, New York, Ohio, Louisiana and Indiana that have joined us here today:  you are the reason that we are winning.  And, not just winning, but winning on principle. And not just any principle, but the principle of human dignity. For we understand what America’s founders so clearly understood: that we are endowed with rights and dignity not from the state but from our Creator.  If

The Hill: Rand Paul Fires Back at ‘Audit the Fed’ Critics

February 6, 2015
News

On February 5, The Hill reported on criticism of Senator Rand Paul’s Audit the Fed bill. In response, Sen. Paul was quoted as saying, “Citizens have the right to know why the Fed’s policies have resulted in a stagnant economy and record numbers of people dropping out of the workforce.” You can read the full story here.

Jindal Emphasizes Pro-Life, Pro-Marriage Views

February 6, 2015
News

After the American Principles Project’s State Lunch on February 5, LifeSiteNews interviewed Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal. The governor stated that he was “proud to stand up for innocent, unborn life,” and that he was “proud to stand up and say that I believe in the traditional definition of marriage, between a man and a woman.” He urged his fellow potential candidates to follow suit and stand up for their conservative beliefs as well. Jindal reiterated that he was “a believer in traditional marriage…a believer in protecting innocent human life, unborn life. [As well as] a strong believer in religious liberty.” You

Elizabeth Warren’s Faux Populism

February 6, 2015
Analysis

Elizabeth Warren wants to incarcerate banking executives.  She wants to insure former Wall Street executives don’t attain high government positions (recently claiming the scalp of Antonio Weiss).  Most of all she wants to prevent the repeal of any part of the Dodd-Frank regulatory monstrosity. Senator Warren is correctly discerning the public’s economic discontent:  survey show large majorities of all parties believe the current economy favors the already-rich over the middle class, and even a majority of Democrats believe the economic policies of the U.S government are rigged against hard working middle class families. Senator Warren’s indignation is meant to pander

Fed Reserve Empire Strikes Back at Rand Paul

February 6, 2015
Analysis

In an orchestrated orgy of protests, Fed governors and regional bank presidents have roasted Sen. Rand Paul and his co-sponsors for reintroducing a bill mandating an audit of the Fed. Loretta Mester, president of the Cleveland Fed, wants us to know that such a thought is “misguided.” Why? “They really are about allowing political considerations to influence monetary policy decisions,” she said in a speech in Columbus. “This would be a tremendous mistake, because it would ultimately lead to poorer economic performance.” What performance? Presumably the Fed wants a pat on the back for the zero-interest-rate policy of the last
