Transport for London (TfL), responsible for travel across Britain’s capital city, has banned cheese from being advertised on the London Underground, arguing that it is too “unhealthy” to be displayed to Londoners and tourists.
TfL argued that showing cheese does not fall within the rules of its advertisement policies and removed the adverts featuring a truckle last month. The transport network has banned foods that are considered “high in fat, sugar, and salt” since 2019 in an effort to address childhood obesity.
Edward Hancock, whose products were featured in the advert, called the decision “crazy,” as TfL permits sodas, ultra-processed foods, and even alcohol to be advertised on the Underground or “Tube” network.
“It’s because the government tried to simplify advice for people. But the problem is when you oversimplify it to such an extent… you get this issue with products that are actually proven to be very good for you,” Hancock stated.
Cheese is not alone in being banned by TfL. White people are also proscribed, having been made unable to apply for internships reserved instead for ethnic minorities.
