💬KEY QUOTE: “We’re watching Iran. I’d rather not see anything happen, but we’re watching them very closely.” – Donald Trump
🎯IMPACT: The U.S. could be poised to strike the Iranian regime, potentially empowering dissidents to oust the mullahs.
President Donald J. Trump has warned that an American “armada” is en route to the Persian Gulf, as thousands are believed dead amid violent protests against the Islamic Republic of Iran’s ruling mullahs. “We’re watching Iran,” he said while departing the World Economic Forum (WEF) summit in Davos, Switzerland this week, adding: “I’d rather not see anything happen but we’re watching them very closely.”
President Trump had previously indicated that he would strike the Iranian regime if protesters began to be slaughtered, but the prospect of intervention may have at least somewhat diminished, with Trump saying, “Iran does want to talk, and we’ll talk.”
Nevertheless, he stressed that a “massive fleet” is heading to Iran “just in case.” Earlier this year, a similar naval build-up off Venezuela culminated in a late-night raid that removed the country’s Marxist dictator, Nicolas Maduro, from power.
In his address at the World Economic Forum, Trump noted that the U.S. has previously targeted Iranian uranium enrichment facilities to prevent nuclear weapon development, and that strikes will be repeated if Iran continues its enrichment efforts.
Iranian military leaders have issued warnings to the U.S. and Israel, with General Mohammad Pakpour of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claiming the country is ready for conflict. President Trump recently warned that instructions have been left for Iran to be “wiped off the face of the earth” if he is assassinated.
Iranian authorities confirm there have been over 3,000 deaths from the protests, but civil rights groups argue the actual toll is much higher.
