Spain’s left-wing government is preparing to approve a decree that would grant amnesty to around 500,000 illegal immigrants, according to Migration Minister Elma Saiz. Speaking on public broadcaster RTVE, Saiz said those covered by the measure would be able to work “in any sector, in any part of the country,” and stressed what she called “the positive impact” of migration.

She added that the policy is about “recognizing and dignifying” people who are already living in Spain. The regularization would apply to migrants who have lived in the country for as little as five months and who applied for international protection before December 31, 2025, as well as their children who are already in Spain. Applications are expected to open in April and run through the end of June.

The leader of Spain’s populist, anti-mass migration VOX party, Santiago Abascal, reacted to the amnesty on X, saying, “500,000 illegals! The tyrant Sánchez hates the Spanish people. The judge claims in his order that the administration has been slow or outright resistant to complying with federal judges’ directives in Minnesota, including his own. He noted the case of an individual he ordered released on January 15, who remained detained as of Monday night.

“The court’s patience is at an end,” Judge Schiltz wrote, continuing, “The practical consequence of respondents’ failure to comply has almost always been significant hardship to aliens (many of whom have lawfully lived and worked in the United States for years and done absolutely nothing wrong). Notably, a number of top Democrat officials have pushed for Norton to retire, especially following the October scamming incident. Late last year, former Democratic National Committee (DNC) acting chair and political strategist Donna Brazile called on the 88-year-old D.C. Delegate to Congress to retire. Writing in the Washington Post, Brazile stated, “It’s in her best interest, and the interest of D.C., for her to serve her current term but then end her extraordinary service in Congress and not seek reelection next year.”

Norton, who first assumed office in 1991, has held the delegate seat for over three decades. Several people, including former Norton staffer Trent Holbrook, have announced their candidacies for the position before her retirement. Holbrook remarked, “I think it’s evident that she’s not going to successfully run. Congresswoman Norton is one of the most successful lawmakers in American history.”

The D.C. delegate’s role does not include voting on legislation like regular House representatives but does allow for the introduction of legislation and participation in committees.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) has called on the Trump administration to reconsider its approach to immigration enforcement following the shooting of Alex Pretti during a confrontation with Border Patrol agents over the weekend. Pretti was killed Saturday in Minneapolis during a chaotic encounter with Border Patrol agents. The shooting came just weeks after the fatal shooting of Renee Good, who hit a federal agent with her car while trying to evade detention.

Abbott addressed the issue during an appearance on The Mark Davis Show, where he was asked what advice he would give Trump to help restore public support for ICE. Abbott, who has presided over the explosive growth of Islam in his state, and the institution of a state Pakistan Day, called for a shift in approach.

“In general, we need to have respect for law enforcement officers in the country. ICE, they are law enforcement officers. So they, being the White House, need to recalibrate on what needs to be done to make sure that respect is going to be re-instilled,” Abbott said. “That’s not an easy task, especially under the current circumstances. But I know that they’re working on a game plan to make sure that they’re going to recalibrate, maybe work from a different direction, to ensure that they get back to what they wanted to do to begin with, which is to remove people from the country who are here illegally, who were allowed in by Joe Biden—and especially those who posed the most danger.”

In recent years, Abbott has been criticized for his questionable positions, including condemning right-leaning online platforms as extremist while engaging in diplomatic or economic cooperation involving officials linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
