❓ WHAT HAPPENED: The U.S. Mint has announced a new half-dollar coin to honor the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. 📺 DETAIL: The coin features the phrases “NEVER FORGET” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The coin also includes the date “09-11-01” and a picture of Lady Liberty. The reverse side depicts Lady Liberty passing a blazing torch, accompanied by the phrases “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “HALF DOLLAR,” and “KNOWLEDGE IS THE ONLY GUARDIAN OF TRUE LIBERTY.” The coin was announced on Thursday by Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent. According to the U.S. Mint’s website, the coins will be available in rolls of 20 for $40 and bags of 100 for $100. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the coins can be pre-ordered through September 25, with shipping expected to begin on December 3. “The United States Mint honors and remembers those who lost their lives as a result of the September 11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pa. #NeverForget,” the U.S. Mint posted on X (formerly Twitter). 💬 KEY QUOTE: “As we approach the 25th anniversary of September 11, we honor the memory of those we lost and the courage of those who risked their lives to save their fellow Americans. A quarter century later, our promise to the victims and their families remains the same: we will never forget.” – Scott Bessent, Secretary of the Treasury. 🎯 IMPACT: This is not the first time that the U.S. Mint has issued a commemorative item for 9/11. For the 10th anniversary in 2011, the U.S. Mint released a one-ounce silver September 11 National Medal, which featured Lady Liberty holding a “Lamp of Remembrance” and the inscription “ALWAYS REMEMBER.” The 25th anniversary coin will serve as a reminder of the attacks for years to come. The announcement of the coin coincides with the 25th anniversary 9/11 memorial service. 📺 FLASHBACK: Earlier this month, the U.S. Mint released a $1 gold coin featuring an image of President Donald J. Trump to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. |
