A new poll has revealed that a significant portion of Democrat and Democrat-leaning voters identify as democratic socialists, underscoring the ideological divide within the party ahead of the midterms.

Democratic socialists are almost twice as likely to support the party moving to the left than non-socialist Democrats, 36 percent of whom would be unhappy with an explicitly socialist candidate.

The attack left Rushdie blind in one eye. On Wednesday, the now-28-year-old Matar was found guilty in federal court of attempting to carry out a fatwa (an Islamic legal ruling) issued by the Iranian government. He was found guilty of three charges: attempting to provide material support to Hezbollah (an Iran-backed terrorist group based in Lebanon), committing an act of terrorism that transcended national boundaries, and providing material support to terrorists. The fatwa was issued by the Islamic Republic’s then-Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, back in 1989. The fatwa called for Rushdie’s death due to his novel The Satanic Verses, which is regarded as blasphemous by Muslims. Matar reportedly spent a year studying the fatwa. Matar is already serving a 25-year sentence after being convicted in state court last year. Prosecutors argued that Matar was inspired to carry out the attack by the fatwa and Hezbollah’s ideology. His writings, which were presented as evidence, referenced “Jihad” and the “need to kill him [Rushdie] ASAP” as well as evidence of Matar praising Hezbollah’s leadership.

Early data from the United Kingdom’s Health Security Agency reveals that nearly 3,000 heat-related deaths occurred during the heatwaves of May and June, with 2026 on track to surpass previous records.

📺 DETAIL: According to new data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), there were 2,877 heat-related deaths in the United Kingdom across the two heatwaves in May and June 2026. This is on track to break the 2022 record of 2,985 deaths. The May heatwave, which took place between May 24 and May 27, resulted in 753 deaths. The June heatwave, which took place between June 21 and June 28, resulted in 2,124 deaths. Both broke heat records for England, with a red heat-health alert issued in June for the second time in the country’s history. In 2024 and 2025, heat-related deaths were significantly lower at 1,311 and 1,504, respectively. Britain’s lack of preparation for high temperatures, primarily due to the country’s lack of air conditioning, jeopardized the safety of its population, especially those in vulnerable demographics, such as the elderly and people with medical conditions. “While the figures are interim, they suggest that, if we experience more periods of hot weather this summer, we could see the highest number of heat-associated deaths on record,” said Dr. Ross Thompson, UKHSA Principal Environmental Public Health Scientist.

Unlike in the United States, where the vast majority of homes have air conditioning, most European homes do not. These statistics reflect both the United Kingdom’s and wider Europe’s vulnerability to extreme heat.

📺 FLASHBACK: The United Kingdom is just one of several European countries impacted by heatwaves. Earlier this month, France’s public health agency reported nearly 6,000 excess deaths throughout June and July. Specifically, the agency reported 21,674 deaths, much higher than the approximately 16,000 deaths statistically expected. Like Britain, France’s vulnerability to extreme heat was attributed in part to a lack of air conditioning. In response to suggestions from Americans online to install A/C, the far-left Deputy Mayor of Paris, Audrey Pulvar, ranted on social media: “Dear American journalists and social media ‘influencers’: for days, some of you have been criticizing and making fun of Paris because the city does not have A/C in every room…OMG, this is so rich!”
