Young Thug Rapper Trial Chaos Suggests Fani Willis’s Ethical Lapses Go Well Beyond Trump Prosecution.

The ethical lapses in Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis‘s office go far beyond the impropriety of appointing her lover, Nathan Wade, as a special prosecutor on her RICO case against former President Donald J. Trump. New questions of legal ethics violations have arisen in another of Willis’s high-profile prosecutions, with the attempted jailing of defense attorney Brian Steel, who is representing rapper Young Thug.

Earlier this week, Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Ural Glanville held Steel in contempt of court after the defense attorney revealed he was made aware that the judge had held an ex parte meeting with prosecutors in Willis‘s office and one of their star witnesses. Citing the meeting, Steel moved for a mistrial in Willis’s prosecution of the Grammy Award-winning rapper and 27 others for gang-related crimes.

Instead of granting the motion, Glanville demanded that Steel break attorney-client privilege and reveal who disclosed the ex parte meeting to him. Steel refused, resulting in the contempt order.

WHAT IS WONG WITH FULTON COUNTY?

Ex parte—a legal term meaning decisions are made without all parties present—meetings, like the one involving Glanville and prosecutors, are often considered improper in a trial setting. Ethical rules typically bar an attorney from meeting with a judge or witness without legal representatives from the other party being also present.

Complicating matters, Judge Glanville on Wednesday ordered prosecutors from Willis‘s office, along with witness Kenneth Copeland and his Kayla Bumpus, to appear at a June 25 hearing to determine whether they should also be held in contempt. The judge indicated he believes one of these three parties disclosed the ex parte meeting to Steel.

Even before the most recent ethical controversy, Willis‘s prosecution of Young Thug was mired in accusations of sloppiness, which caused extensive delays in the case. The degree of impropriety by the District Attorney’s office and Judge Glanville echoes the ethical breaches that have plagued Willis’s RICO prosecution of former President Trump.

FANI’S TRUMP TROUBLES.

In March, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee ordered that either Willis or special prosecutor Nathan Wade would have to resign from the Trump production. The order came after extensive evidence was presented showing that Willis and Wade had engaged in a romantic relationship prior to the latter’s appointment as a special prosecutor on the case. Wade subsequently resigned from the District Attorney’s office.

Despite initially denying the accusations of impropriety due to her relationship with Wade, Willis eventually acknowledged that he was her lover—though both have disputed the timeline as to when they became involved. With Wade’s resignation, Willis has been allowed to remain as the prosecutor in the RICO case.

However, attorneys representing former President Trump and several of his co-defendants have appealed McAfee’s ruling. Last week, the Georgia Court of Appeals put Willis’s prosecution of Trump on hold until after the 2024 presidential election as they weigh whether the District Attorney should be disqualified from the case.

The investigation reportedly centers on preemptive pardons Biden granted to several family members and clemency decisions for 37 federal inmates, changing their sentences from death penalties to life imprisonment. Washington, D.C.’s sole, 2.2-mile-long streetcar line will soon be no more, with the city government deciding to replace the over $200 million boondoggle just 15 years after track for the project was first laid on H Street NE and a decade after actual operations commenced. Initially billed as an environmentally friendly, more accessible, and aesthetically pleasing alternative to city buses, the streetcar line will be replaced by a bus once again. Still, in an apparent attempt to save face, Mayor Muriel Bowser insists the electric bus is actually a “next generation streetcar.”

The electric bus that will replace the H Street streetcar will utilize the existing overhead power cables, meaning it will still suffer from some of the existing drawbacks that the failed street-level rail system did. Notably, the existing rail line lacks a barrier separating it from the street, which has resulted in the streetcar being unable to proceed forward when a car is double-parked and blocking its track. While the electric bus will not be confined to a track in the same manner as the streetcar, the overhead cables will still limit its maneuverability.

In over one decade of operation, the D.C. streetcar has never once generated a single dollar of revenue. It operates on a $10 million taxpayer subsidy per year. After years of delays and cost overruns, an eventual rushed rollout of the streetcar caused city officials to neglect installing a fare collection system on the streetcar. Eventually, the city government gave up on any plans to charge streetcar riders as the single 2.2-mile line struggled to match the capacity of buses running along the same route.

Despite the city’s budget constraints playing a significant role in the decision to shutter the sole operating streetcar line, the Democrat-dominated D.C. government still intends to push forward with a costly “green” public transit system. City Administrator Kevin Donahue has indicated that the overhead cable-powered electric bus line will allow officials “to more nimbly and quickly expand the streetcar line out beyond where we currently are.”

The fallout has sparked speculation about snap elections, which could occur this autumn. Analysts suggest that Wilders will likely center his campaign on immigration issues. Wilders and the PVV came first in last year’s national elections, and polling suggests that the PVV remains ahead.

Prime Minister Schoof is expected to offer the cabinet’s resignation to King Willem-Alexander. Now, with another PiS-aligned candidate winning the presidency, Tusk’s government will remain constrained throughout its term.

The victory of Nawrocki, an anti-communist historian, in Sunday’s election is widely seen as a public rebuke of Tusk, a former European Union president, and his EU-backed agenda, which has included arresting his political opponents.

A new poll shows that Americans increasingly see the Republicans under President Donald J. Trump as best representing the middle class. The survey, conducted between May 5 and May 26, found that 34 percent of respondents identified the Democratic Party as the “party of the middle class,” while 32 percent said the same of the Republican Party. The poll surveyed 2,028 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of 2.7 percent.

The findings reveal a dramatic shift from past decades. In 1989, the Democratic Party held a 23-point lead over Republicans in being seen as the party of the middle class. CNN Analyst Harry Enten commented on the results, saying, “This, I think, speaks to Democratic ills more than anything else. They have traditionally been the party of the middle class. No more. The poll also highlighted Americans’ broader perceptions of the two major parties. A Chinese student at the University of Michigan has fled to China after being charged with illegal voting in the 2024 election, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Haoxiang Gao, a foreign national attending the university, reportedly turned himself in last October after allegedly registering to vote and casting a ballot in Michigan’s general election. Gao was charged with two felonies: false swearing to register to vote and attempting to vote as an unqualified elector.

Court records reveal that during his arraignment, Gao was ordered to surrender his Chinese passport and remain within the state. The passport he turned over had a serial number ending in “1332.” Gao later failed to appear for scheduled court hearings on March 6 and April 24. Last Friday, federal prosecutors disclosed that Gao boarded a Delta flight from Detroit International Airport to Shanghai, China, on January 19, using a different Chinese passport with a serial number ending in “7137.”

The FBI has since charged Gao federally with flight to avoid prosecution. However, the U.S. does not have an extradition treaty with China, complicating efforts to bring him back to face justice.

The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding election integrity and the challenges of prosecuting foreign nationals who violate U.S. election laws. Democrat Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) has praised President Donald J. Trump’s Middle East policies, saying the Republican president was right to scrap the Obama-Biden Iran deal and push for a new agreement placing greater restrictions on the Islamist nation’s ability to enrich uranium. Notably, Fetterman’s comments put him at odds with most of his fellow Democrats, a fact he openly admits.

“I wasn’t really allowed to disagree, politically, with the original agreement on Iran,” Fetterman said during a panel discussion alongside Senator Dave McCormick (R-PA) on June 2. “I really do think, now, Trump did the right thing to break that agreement,” he added.

President Trump scrapped the Iran nuclear deal and re-imposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic during his first term in office. Known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the Iran deal was seen by critics as overly weak on enforcement and would likely do little to prevent the country from developing a nuclear weapons program. While former President Joe Biden did not entirely reinstate he agreement, his government lifted sanctions on Iran and essentially allowed its nuclear program to continue unabated.

After retaking the White House in 2024, President Trump announced he would be reinstating maximum pressure on Iran with aggressive sanctions aimed at the country’s oil industry. However, Trump has also been clear that he would seek a new agreement with Iran to end its nuclear weapons development and subject the country to stringent International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) oversight. In March, President Trump told the Iranians they must negotiate a new nuclear deal with the United States or face consequences. “The other alternative [to negotiations] is we have to do something,” he said, suggesting the possibility of U.S.-backed strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Senator Fetterman’s comments are not unusual for him, as he has taken a pro-Israel stance since the October 7 massacres by the terrorist group Hamas, which provoked the current conflict in Gaza. Fetterman has also backed, at least in part, Trump’s efforts to reshore American jobs and was the first Democrat to meet with the America First leader following the 2024 election.

Following the January meeting at Mar-a-Lago, Trump called Fetterman “fascinating” and said, “He’s a commonsense person. He’s not liberal or conservative. He’s just a commonsense person, which is beautiful.”

Fetterman is not the only figure on the left to praise Trump’s policies. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), the former far-left presidential candidate, surprisingly praised the Trump administration’s border policies.
