White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said President Joe Biden would not pardon his son, Hunter Biden, if he is convicted on felony gun charges. Earlier this week Hunter Biden was indicted by Department of Justice (DOJ) special counsel David Weiss. The three felony charges include making a false statement on a federal firearms form and possessing a gun as a prohibited individual.

In late July, federal judge Maryellen Noreika rejected a sweetheart plea deal that would have required Hunter Biden to enter a “diversion program” while facing no jail time for federal tax and gun crimes. Following the collapse of the deal, David Weiss – the DOJ lawyer who oversaw the federal investigation into Hunter Biden – was elevated by Attorney General Merrick Garland to special counsel, granting him broader investigatory purview. The promotion of Weiss to special counsel has drawn criticism as it was Weiss who worked on the now void plea agreement.
Questions about Hunter Biden’s ongoing legal troubles only add to compounding problems for President Joe Biden. Earlier this week, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced that Congress was launching a formal impeachment inquiry into the President, citing mounting evidence that the elder Biden had abused public office to profit off of his son Hunter’s foreign business dealings.
